Default Help!!! Bad Rear End Fitment

This is weird.....

I put a 69 frame under a 71 roadster and all fit and aligned up well. I used two guide pins and all of the bolts went in properly. The body fits real nice with good door alignment and operation.

I put new rubbers mounts in the rear end cross member, bolted it to the rear end and hoisted it in place. WOW!!! The rear end seems to be about 1/2" to 3/4" too far forward. The front snubber mound does not line up at all and the driveshaft yokes are hitting the body.

I was under the assumption that the frame 69 to 78 (except for the crash bumpers) are the same. If not then either: 1) the rear end cross member is wrong, 2) the rear end back cover is wrong, or 3) the frame is screwed up.

I am baffled and need some expert advise/opinions before I go crazy over this one.

I have pictures but could not figure out how to post them.

Many thanks,
Joe Germann

They should be the same back there. Just a thought. The rear cross member only goes one way, but are you sure that you have it on correctly. The holes where the rear end mounts have slightly different spacings, but someone could have modified them.

Default Rear Cross Member

I am sure the rear cross member is mounted on the differential correctly. I pulled the assembly down yesterday and flipped the cross member to make sure. It is symetrical for sure. No difference at all.

This really boggles my mind. Mounting of the rear end center section has absolutely nothing to do with the mounting of the body.

Are there any differences in back differential covers - year to year?

Are there any differences in cross members - year to year?

The frame I have is an automatic frame in a standard shif car. Other than the clutch shaft mounting tab and a removable trans cross member it should be identical. Right?

How can this NOT fit? If it is NOT an improper cross member or differnetial cover, the only fix I can see is to modify the cross member to push the rear end towards the rear of the car.

I say bent frame. There is no right, left, forward or backwards on the crossmember. Same x-member will work from 63-79.

Default rear end

The frame was perfect, never hit. I'll examine the old frame and take some measurements to see how things line up with respect to the old and original frame.
