Default Fuel Pump?

I have a 74 Roadster with a 350. It runs fine, but when I jump on the throttle, it starts to act like I'm running out of gas. If I pull over and let it idle for a while it will eventually calm down and let me continue driving. Is this a fuel pump issue? Let me know if anyone has experienced this.

Thanks!

Sounds like it might be, when was your last fuel filter change? How old is the pump? Float level in the carb set correctly?

I just bought the car, so I don't know. And I'm no expert, so I was hoping to get a few possiblilities of what the problem may be and maybe an order to check them in.

Thanks!

Default Help: Same problem!!

What a minute, this sounds all too familiar. I just purchased a 1973 vette, 350 automatic, and am having the same problems. After idling fine, heading up a hill or looking to hit the throttle, the car appears to bog out as if it no longer is getting gas. I had a mechanic replace the fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel filter, and even drain most of the gas. It appears that someting is clogging the line at different times, or... carb issues.

I have twice removed a rubber gas line to the carb, blown air through it back to the gas tank, reinstalled and then the engine runs great for the next few minutes, until eventually, I need that full horse power and it again, appears to bog out by not getting gas effectively and accurately. The only way I was able to get up a hill the other day was in reverse.

I have waited a long time to get a vette, and want to hit the road with it before the winter comes in a month. (Pittsburgh, PA).

Any ideas, sending unit, carb issue?

Much appreciated any help.

Vapor lock, try vented cap (or drill a small hole)
OR in-crb fuel filter, at inlet.

I had this same problem on a Pontiac 67 GTO, turned out to be the fuel strainer on the pickup line in the tank. Everything was fine until the engine needed more fuel. The more fuel the pump needed the more restricted the strainer got.

When you mention fuel strainer, are you referring to the "sock" in the tank?

Yes I believe he was referring to the sock. Im sure you could benifit from cleaning out your tank and replacing the old sock. I pulled mine out of my 74 and it was hard as a rock and cracking. Dont rule out vapor lock though. Do you have a stock gas cap?

How do you pull the sock out? Just through the gas lid?

Yes, I believe it is stock, not vented. Trying to understand this whole vapor lock thing...

Some other things to check are your Vacuum advance, Accelerator pump and your coil. I just remedied a situation where my 68 BB felt like it was running out of gas over 2500 RPM's. It was a bad coil.

Your 74 has a vented tank, so I dont really think your getting vapor lock from not venting. But, do you still have the stock return line running from a stock fuel pump. If its been capped off, then you might possibly be getting some.

ignition coil. That is also on my list! (68 L-36). There was an archived post where someone had the same issue. Replaced a flamethrower coil I believe.

(is there an echo in here? ) Or, as my kids would say, "jinks!"
