Magnaflow...Flowmaster.....go to a car show and see if someone will fire up their car for you to hear and see what blows your skirt up. Asking about something audible on a forum is just too subject to weirdness. One man's rumble is another man's irritating resonance, etc.
I've just recently upgraded to a custom 3" exhaust system with the Magnaflow 40's and am very pleased with the rumble. It's not blatantly loud like a hot rod but has a nice cool "GluuuuuummmmmmmmmpbgluuuuummmmmmmmmpbgG luuuuuumpbgluuuuuummmmmmmmmmpbg" sound.
It's still quiet enough at high way speeds to not notice but when I step on it, you really hear how good the engine sounds!

oregon, what's the power output of your engine? i intended to have this same set up (hooker comp headers/3'' exhaust plus 40's delta force mufflers) but my engine builder (american speed) told me just forget it, it will kill my low and mid torque numbers (530tq and 570hp at 6.1000 rpm)...do you have this low/mid end power/trq reduction up to 4.000 rpms?
I'm running stainless dynomax. Sounds great with the tips I have now. I first tried some Hooker dual outlet tips and the car sounded like rocks in a tin can.
I've got the Magnaflows from Corvette Central. They sound great. Nice burble at idle. Open her up and you get some sweet music. I highly reccommend them.

Hello Panic...Actually, it seemed to increase the low end torque when I upgraded to the Edelbrock Performer EPS intake. That couple with the 3/4 cam greatly increases my low end. Remember, my engine was a stock rebuild of a 1971 vette 350 (the block number's indicate this to be a turbo-fire 350). So, it increased all across the spectrum in the case of my engine. The whole motor just seems to breathe better.
I've got flowmaster 50 series on mine and love the sound. Not too loud, but definitely a great sound when you get on it. Now, they hang down below the bumper cover which I don't like, but was told by my exhaust guy that they are too big to tuck up like factory muffler around the spare tire carrier. He did say 40's would tuck up there though.

I hope that helps!
hi oregon, below is what my engine builder, 'American Speed' of Ill, thinks of my intention to build a 3'' exhaust...

A 3" exhaust system will kill bottom and mid range torque with your engine. We know this.
Would ONLY be good for high rpm use in which case I would disconnect exhaust from headers anyway....

meantime i've bought everything necessary to build it and really do not know what to do..
