Default Small shop press question

I have one of Harbor Freight's 12 ton shop presses. I've run into a problem trying to install my rear wheel studs - the shaft under the jack is shorter than the rear spindle shaft. Does anyone have a suggestion for whipping up an extension? I need about 2" at most.

Hi Batman

I pulled my wheel studs through from the outboard side using some washers and a lug nut.

I'm upgrading mine, and the fit is very tight. The nut trick isn't going to work, it's been tried and failed. I really need to get about 2" more on the pin on my press.

How about an impact socket? Will that work as an extension?

Not sure how I'd hold it rigidly in place. I'll check it out tonight.

Hmm...maybe drill and tap the end of the pin on the press, find a 1" steel dowel, drill and tap that, and use a stud to hold them together...

I would use a socket or a piece of steel bar stock cut to the needed length. Just make sure you are very careful about it not slipping out and shooting across the room. Or snap an extension onto a socket that slips over the press shaft. That would be secure and long enough.

Use a deep 1" socket, put the stud in the flange, place stud/flange on table with press plate across the bridge, socket over the stud and press

Press them out the opposite way...

Place a socket over the round end of the stud big enough for the stud head to fit into, on the side opposite the threaded part. Press the spindle off the stud, instead of pressing the stud out of the spindle.

Did that make any sense?

Would an electrical conduit connector work? It's a tube that is used to connect 2 pcs. of conduit together. Has a screw in each end. I'm thinking if the ID is correct you could mount one end to the press pusher and then connect a piece of bar the same dia. to the other end. Would hold the 2 together and give you your length. Just thinking outloud.

I don't think those are tough enough, the socket thing will work fine, asuming he has the press plates

I press them out with a 3# drill hammer.

Thanks for the advice...I'll try the socket thing tomorrow.

Batman-can you put all 5 studs in and put the heads down on the plates(3 on one and 2 on the other)-then put the press in the center of axle and push all 5 in at once ?Use a brass hammer and tap on face of axle flange while holding pressure with press-then flip over and seat each one with hammer
