Default Transmission coolers

Those of you that use aftermarket trans coolers, what cooler do you recommend, are you running the cooler in series with the radiator cooler and where did you mount the cooler on an AC car. I am going with a higher stall converter and need to keep the heat down.

I bought the largest cooler Kragen had in stock, and used some steel strap material to secure it to the radiator support in front of the rad. Run the fluid through the rad first, then the cooler(recommended by BTO).
I have a BTO 200-R4 with a 2200 stall converter, this set-up keeps the trans at about 150 dgrees

Going to run mine without the radiator cooler in line, no reason to add whatever the coolant heat is to the tranny oil. The coolant will be hotter that the tranny juice most of the time, so running it thru the rad doesn't make much sence.

I have a high stall converter in my TH200R4 and the transmission ran 220 degrees after 2 passes with the B&M cooler. Went with 2 18 inch heat sink design dual pass coolers and I haven't seen transmission temps above 150 degrees since (even after 5+ passes at the track)

REPLY: For my 1970 built Big Block, I installed two 10x8" BandM plate type Coolers on the front of my radiator for engine oil to go thru (side by side) . I plumbed them parallel . On a hot day after a good run , at idle i could keep my hand on the common oil return line . I took one off cause i was overcooling the oil. The BandM's are super sturdy and wont get damaged from pressure washing them clean either. See www.jcwhitney.com for an 11x8" BandM plate cooler for auto. trans. oil. Dave.

I always thought the same thing, but I figured I'd better do it the way the vendor says in case something goes wrong. Think I'll try it your way, it does make more sense

Tankers-I would like to have posted a pic, but theres no way I can get a camera into the nose of my 68 for a clear shot

Actually I am doing mine the way grandsport did, Haven't bought yet but found some deals on ebay. The heat sink is the way to go, mount it under the car to take advantage of the air flow under there. Normal operating temps of under 150, it males no sence to run it thru the radiator, will clean up some plumbing and enhance some air flow thru the radiator.

As my wife has explained to me BIGGER IS BETTER, at least when it comes to tranny coolers, get the biggest one, or two, you can fit in. I highly recommend routing it through your existing rad cooler also, your tranny temps on a bad day will far exceed your coolant temps, the extra help makes a difference ( ITS BIGGER THAT WAY) yes honey I heard you.
9 times out of 10 you will cook a trans before the engine

Will a 24 inch heat sink cooler cool the transmission enough.

I used a heat sink: mounted it up infront of the rad support on the valence braces: trans cooler mounting

What timing, you answered the thread I just started. Do you also use the radiator in line with the heat sink.

yes, oil comes from the trans through the cooler and then through the rad. I am thinking of changing it to the other way though.
