Default How to Paint a Steering Column ?

It seems like the "plastic" is different on the pieces of a '79 steering column. I have painted it twice only to have it flake off.
I primed it first with plastic primer then top coated with normal rustoleum - let is set for 48 hours and the top coated it with a clear coat. It seems like the paint peeled right off on the upper column as it just didn't stick at all. Should I be using a different primer? or what else?

Sanding won't remove all of it. That will actually grind it in. Silicone is a painter's worst enemy. The plastic primer is a good idea, but I would use a interior trim paint instead of rustoleum.

I would like to use an interior trim paint but the only match to Doeskin is the Rustoleum "Sand" . Seems like all of the interior trim paint is black and if you go to an auto paint shop they will only sell it in large quantities.

We sell sem interior paint at work in spray cans. I believe it's about $9 and everyone brags on it. We can also mix dye in any quantity down to 4 ounces if I can look up the code.

I use a special silicone removing degreaser, available at any good paint store, I usually sand it down first or knock off the imperfections if the paint isn't too bad, then scotchbrite it, degrease and hit it with primer and then paint

I need to paint my steering column badly. Black will be my color of choice this time. Its kinda Doeskin at the moment.

Did you remove the whole dash, steering wheel, turn signals and other bars or did you mask it? All that perceived work is keeping my column looking funky.

Thanks.
