when the torque converter locks up you will have a direct connection between the engine and trans.....so go about 60 to 70 mph and in just about any trans that has a lock up you will have reached the speed for lock up and punch the gas pedal and listen/watch rpm for the engine to rev with out a noticeable increase inthe mph...if the engine revs you do not have a lock up unit
Thanks for the Info. Yep :o You are right I did mean lock-up. Can you tell me if this is a standard type of convertor for a Corvette? I have a 81 with a 5.7 in it. 3 Speed trans. Tim
It probly has the lockup converter in it, get under there and look on the drivers side of the tranny, there will be a 4 pin connector there if it has it.
Easy way = cruise at a steady 50 mph on a flat road. Don't remove your foot from the accelerator and lightly touch the brakes - enough to actuate your brake lights but not the brakes. If you have a lockup converter, it will unlock and your rpms will rise for a second and then drop back. If nothing happens, either you do not have a lockup, or the brake switch may be out of adjustment and you are not locking up like you should.
