Default T/A adjustment

First some history. Managed to swap the complete 3.7 ratio diff from my 74 vet for a standard 3.08. The housings looked the same , but didn't measure it. Went in okay, but started chewing out the rear tyres. So with the help of a few threads I spent a few hours (under stated) cutting out the T/A bushings/bolts. There were shims on either side of the bushings when I started hacking, few less when I had finished. Anyway, got the new bushings, bolts etc and tried to install them. Problem is with no shims in place and the T/A pulled out as far as it will go I still have at least half an inch of toe in on both back wheels.
So what do I do ? is there any other adjustment I can do?
Diff is surpose to be from a similar year car
Have thought of using a bigger hammer, but didn't work on the last job!!
Would appreciate any help

This is just a wild guess, but the half shafts and strut rods for the 3:08 may be shorter that the ones you have on your car now. Could you measure them to see if there is any difference? Just a thought.

All halfshafts from '63 to '79 are the same length. '63 to '74 are 2 1/2 wide and '75 to '79 are 3 inch wide. 80 to 82 will fit but are a different length. Did you change the halfshafts?

Didn't change the halfshafts, just dropped the 3.7 out and dropped the 3.08 back in. Everything went fine until the bushings.
