I have just gotten my ps pump changed and when I fired it up and shut it off to check the fluid level, the fluid had changed from clear to a pink milky color. Looks like maybe water in the fluid, but I can't imagine how it could have gotten in, the car has been in the garage all the time. If this is what it looks like, what is the best way to drain the system and replace the fluid? Thanks, Wells
So you changed the pump out and refilled it with the clear stuff, then started up and its pink? Thats probly because you didn't drain the entire system. There would have been the old red/contaminated stuff in the cylinder. pull of the return line from the pump to drain and take the 2 lines off the cylinder them move the wheels side to side to get as much out as you can and refill.
I just use dextron II auto tranny fluid in mine - Which is red.
To drain the power steering. Jack the front end off the ground. Remove the the low pressure 3/8 rubber hose off of the rear closer to motor side of the power steering pump resevoir. Aim it into a pan and fire up the motor. Move your steeering from lock to lock to remove all the oil from the ram and shut off the motor. It should be empty in about 15-30 seconds.
Genuine GM power steering fluid is the only fluid that is specifically formulated to operate with the Saginaw P-type power steering pump. The fluid is a clear amber color and is available at any GM dealer.
