Default 427 Distributor Advance????

What should the TOTAL advance be on a 68 435 HP car? Where should it be all in, around 3K rpm?
Thanks, Tommy

I have asked the same question and have gotten some great info, this may help you to. I asked about a solid roller camed motor but I think some of it will aply to yours to.

Run 36 degrees +- all in before 3000. You dont "need" a vacumm advance. Good idle with a auto and the proper converter should be near 850 in and out of gear. If standard, just plain ol 850 is fine. And a 68 435 car should be a 4 speed piece.

You don't "need" to hook up all the plug wires either, but I'll bet it runs better with than without. Run a vacuum advance.

Neal, Thanks! Mine is running on the TI and has no vaccum advance. I'll set my total and let the idle fall wherever. If it's not too high to start, I'll be fine.

Opp`s, I should have known better. That information is not in the hot rod rags.

Didn't the TI have a vacuum advance?

Some did and some did not even though one was attached to the distributor it was a blank. Non of the really high HP engines use one. I tried to tell you it wasn`t necessary but you got smart with the plug wire comment. Learn something every day on how to run a high HP engine dont you.

Sorry for you, I dont know a damn thing about girlie man vacumm cleaners. However it appears like your a good canidate for a nice set of muffler bearings, latest hot tip go fast accessory in the hot rod rags. Guaranteed for life as I suspect your one of those life timer parts purchasers whether or not you know how to use them. Really good in the bench racing BS sessions at your local cruise too.

No, took it apart with one L88 into a 68 Vette and the other L88 in to a pure drag hydro. The twin had a weak spot at high speeds that had the potential of breaking the chain coupler between the engines at any time flipping the canoe on quick deceleration. Impressive, crowd pleaser, sort of unique, but two close calls were enough. That SOB was worse than my AA fuel roadster. Always asked who drove it, others would say that crazy fool over there. I may be a crazy fool, but i`m not stupid. At least I dont think so but others probably have a different opinion. Both the 68 Vette and the drag hydro were very succesful for put together laughs and larks. But my real joy was the race cars and the NHRA competition. Why did you ask? Damn look how long this is it`s become a story. Know a publisher?
