Had to pull the sending unit to fix a sticking sending unit float and the connector from the pump to the hard line on the sending unit was swollen and was lose.
So while I had things apart I went ahead and changed to an 85-fuel pump for better volume. A buddy of mine told me about doing this and it works great, at start up no more surging and much better throttle response. I also upped the fuel pressure by about 3 lbs at the regulator.
The fuel pump upgrade is one of the best things you can do to a crossfire engine. The stock pump can barely handle the stock engine. I did this on mine awhile back and as you say it does fix the idle and response. Now change the cam and port the manifold and you will really see a performance increase.
I've got a new 85 unit in a box of parts I have.Is there any different wireing involved in this swap?I also have an 82 thats all original. If this works like everybody say I would like to do this.Do you have to drop the tank or can you get to it through the filler neck?
you have to change the conenctors (in tank ones) because the TPI pump has a different conenctor, you can get a pigtail from GM and depending on what pump you bought it may come with the pump. You can pull the whole shebang out through the filler neck after removing the door assembly. Takes some twisting and turning and careful maneuvering but it will come out.
