While installing and setting up my 200-4R transmission, I've had the distributor out a number of times. Prior to this, I've had it out but never took the time to align it properly.
No problem getting the timing set and the engine is running fine. The issue is that I can't seem to get it close to the "perfect" alignment where the connectors on the tower point directly to the driver's side. It appears that there is a tooth position where I want it on the cam gear and the distributor drive, but I can't get the distributor to seat properly when I put it in this position. Seems to seat fine on the teeth on either side.
Has anyone ever seen this before? More anoying than a problem, but I'm also a little concerned that there may be an issue with the cam gear. The teeth on the disributor are pristine.

If you've tried installing the distributor one tooth on either side of the current position and it still doesn't look right after timing the engine, pull the distributor out and knock the roll pin out of the drive gear. Rotate the gear 180 degrees and put the pin back in. The gear is not symmetrical, so this will allow you to get the distrubutor installed in a position halfway in between your existing positions.
Lars
by symetrical, lars just means there aren't an even number of teeth on the gear. no particular reason, just engineers idea of best cut, thickness, engagement, etc.
to move the oil pump, simply put a long screwdriver down the hole and turn the drive. you will need a flashlight to see it.

Ok, now I understand.
I had a mental picture of an accentric gear and couldn't rationalize why that would make sense.
