Default temp sender question - 1971

I've read some old posts on this very common issue (temp gauge not working)
and have followed all the troubleshooting suggestions.
I have found that when I ground the single green wire (which
connects to the sender) my temp gauge needle does move all the
way to the right. So...it appears that my sender is at fault.

Here is my question. Which sender should I buy?
The sender currently installed in my 71 has the flat type connector
(circled in green in the pic). All of the parts vendors list the sender
with the "pin" type connector for 71 (circled in red). Does it matter
which sender I get?

It's possible that the connector was changed at some point.......the correct unit for your '71 is the one circled in red. This is the same one for my '69. The green circled one has a different resistance value and probably would not register accurately. The correct wire for this is the green wire coming from the alternator harness. If your current sending unit is the green circled one, it's the wrong one for your car. You'll have to get or make a sleeve connector to fit the pin end.

I just ran outside and checked the temp sender on my '71 small block. It looks like the third one, 01513462.

I replaced my forward wire harness last year (which includes the plug for the temp sender), and it has the connector for the one I mentioned above.

I ordered the harness from Lectric Limited, as well as ordering the temp sender too, and number three is what they sent. They know their stuff pretty well, so I would assume they are correct.

Good luck...

The 1st and 3rd one look very similar, does yours attach with a ring terminal and nut?.....the pin appears to be threaded. The 1st one uses a sleeve to attach to the smooth pin top. Lectric Limited lists the 1st one for a '69 and also a '71......perhaps they are interchangeable.

You're right. I just checked it, and it's the first one (the one with the pin grip).

Hope this helps...
