I just removed the trans pan to replace filter and fluid. I have a couple of questions
1. While I have the pan off is there anything I should look for or replace?
2. I suspect the previous owner had not changed the fluid in sometime. It was very brown but did not smell like it was burnt- just very dirty. Is this an indication of anything other than it has not been changed in a long time?
3. The gasket that came with the filter is cork. Any tricks when I put the pan back together? Is cork ok or is there a better gasket I should use?
Cork is fine, just be sure to torque to spec and not give into the urge to overtighten...I think it is 12 ft-lbs but check the book. Also you may want to write down the trans number that's on the casing right above where the linkage connects on the driver side...easy to see now, hard to see when reassembled. Just keep it on file for when you recover the buildsheet for comparison.
Thanks, I never thought of that. I pulled my gas tank last month due to a leak and I have my build sheet. Should I change the modulator now? I do not think it is bad (I have to look into the rubber hose to see if there is fluid). I am not sure if modulators go bad periodically and better to do it now when the pan is off.
My 80 has a 350c lock up convertor, I just put in a B&M shift kit. set for street/strip. After 79k miles, fluid looked great. It will now get a little rubber when it hits second gear. Its all stock 3.08 gear, 190 HP. It did need a modulator, it had fluid in it.
