I finally got the title to my 76 to go register it. Here in my county in Indiana we have emissions testing. I boughht the car from Ohio and what do ya know, the Cat was missing and they wouldn't pass e without it. They did test it though and I was ok on the CO2 but not the hydrocarbons. Is that a direct result of the Cat missing?
Also, I have a dilemma. I got a 30 day permit so I can get it fixed. However, the emissions in my county will cease to exist December 31st.
What would you guys do? Get it fixed now or wait until the first of the year and leave the Cat off?

A normal cat converter has three jobs
A three-way catalytic converter has three simultaneous tasks:
1. Reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen: 2NOx → xO2 + N2
2. Oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide: 2CO + O2 → 2CO2
3. Oxidation of unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) to carbon dioxide and water: CxHy + nO2 → xCO2 + mH2O
Could stick a highflow catalytic convertor in there for now and just yank it afterwards.
However, honestly, how much driving do you think you'll be doing in it after your 30 days is up?
yeah winter is approaching, so I may not drive it much at all. But last year there were several nice days through December here. May want to take her for a spin.
An aftermarket high-flow cat is under $100. Might be worth putting one on there as I doubt it will cost you any power and you it might make you feel good?
Do the 30 day thing and see how much you can skate after that. That will get you to the middle/end of october, maybe try and beg another 30 out of them, then your down for the winter anyways
The only thing that I can think of is that there's also N2O coming out of the tailpipe and that's a greenhouse gas.....now...surely some ricer will plumb his exhaust into his NOS bottle for a free recharge

I think his chemistry is right - but he got one thing wrong right off the bat. PCV systems were introduced long before 1963 - big trucks had them in the late 30s.
No emission controls on mine at all & my CO reading was something like 0.14ppm (which is good). HC was a little high & the reason was that the idle mixture was set too lean. As it was lean the burn wasn't as efficient as it could be, hence unburnt fuel was heading out of the pipe. Richening the idle mixture brought the levels right down (but I don't know the figures), so it may be worth fiddling with the carb settings to see if you can drop the emissions down & then make a decision on the way to go.
The environment? Cats contain platinum AFAIK. Got any idea of the amount of pollution caused by getting hold of platinum? A cat reduces CO & HC, but production of platinum causes a few probems of it's own. Frequently found with platinum deposits are lovely things like arsenic & uranium, along with other "green" goodies. These cause problems all of their own (a friend owns a mine, the pollution aspects of mining it are a nightmare). Mining & refining the platinum takes energy, energy production causes pollution. Early cats didn't start working until they'd fully warmed up (don't know about moden ones). What happens to all the old cats? Landfill? HC emissions? Look out, there could be a bit coming out of your tailpipe! We'll completely ignore the gas that pours into the atmosphere every time somebody fills their gas tank, or the fumes that I've seen pouring from vents when a gas station has it's fuel tanks filled (used to work above one & the stink of petrol/gas when the tanks was filled was very, very strong). And then there's aircraft dumping large loads of fuel into the atmosphere....... Pollution, hurumph. If the "greens" looked at the planet as a closed system then maybe they'd see that the car isn't the largest polluter (but the owner can be convinced that he/she is & then become a cash cow for taxation purposes).
The total and complete enviro LIE perpetrated on the American consumers by the likes of Ralph Nader and company....LONG LIST....is just astounding.....
I KNOW the truth....and most of the public CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
