Default Spark plug wire replacement NEW PROBLEM

I haven't worked on the car since Saturday. I had some time tonight so a jacked it back up and was going to pull off the boots as you guys suggested and thread the wires thru.

Well I think Bubba did the last plug wire change on my car. The first clue was he used Ford spark plugs and wires. The secound is the number 4 plug wire is pinched between the shielding and the block (see photo). I loosened the one bolt I can see holding the shielding on and it doesn't budge. It looks like the motor mount is keeping it from moving.

Does that shield go above the motor mount or is there another bolt behind the starter?

Thanks

1 common bolt, the motor mount bolt holds the shield.

If I loosen that bolt I can just jack up the motor a 1/4 inch right? Where is a safe place to lift from?

I am waiting to find out that answer myself.
I was going to do this on my 75, but I think I will wait until
I read all of these threads.

The lower "V" wire shielding is held on by two bolts. One is the motor mount bolt (upper right), and a second bolt, much smaller, screws into the block through the bracket attached to the shield (lower left)

The pinching of the spark plug wire is not all that uncommon, especially on wires that haven't been changed in a while and were not positioned carefully when they were installed. These shields get bent easily from "man-handling" so be gentle. Place a couple of tie wraps around the two forward wires in a couple of places (hidden behind the shield) before reinstalling the shields. The shield should lay very close to the block and prevent the wires from slipping between the block and shield. You might have to "adjust" the mounting points to get them to fit closer.

Good luck... GUSTO

you don't need to jack up the motor at all, just loosen that one motor mount bolt and you can move the sheilding out of the way enough to route the wires through the little clips back there. The other 2 bolts will keep the motor from going anywhere. To get the new wires through you need to take off the rubber boot on the distributer side of the cable and thread it through...took me a little while to figure that one out. The passenger side is tougher because the starter is in the way, but same process. I actually got lazy and left those 2 outside the shield at first, but eventually put them in the right spot when I dropped the starter to change the oilpan gasket.

One of the first jobs I did on my 77 was ****** all that junk off the motor and put in some nice looms and custm cut plug wires. Made life a lot easier.

Gusto's pic of the V-Shield should answer your question but if it helps I have a few pics of my '78 motor while it was still out of the car and I was starting to reassemble the parts on it that shows the spark plug wires and V-shields and you can see the two bolt locations as shown in gusto's pic of the shield piece.

When I did my 1980, I removed the motor mount bolt to get the shield off and it worked out okay. Its time consuming and I would not want to do it again. Take your time and it should be okay.

Barry and Gusto thanks for the photos, they helped alot. I got the v shield loose and got the wire back in. It still seems to be stuck on something.

I am having a change in plans. I am going to defer the wire change until I put the car away for the winter. I am going to pull the A/C compressor and change the valve cover gaskets and then degrease everything under there. It will be more enjoyable when I can take my time and clean everything up as I go.

Thanks for the help.

Joe
