Default correct e brake cable routing???

I am in the process of replacing the e brake system on my 70. I am installing new cable and shoes. I got the shoes in ok, but when I put in the cable, the ball at the tip of the cable seems to want to come out of the lever when I pull on the cable as if I was applying the e brake. I have the spring on the cable between the ball at the lever and the plastic guide. Does this seem normal? I put in a new hardware kit also. Should I bend down the tab on the lever the cable goes into? Any suggestions would be helpful.

The spring goes between the plastic guide and the lever-not the ball. The ball goes on the backside of the lever.Dont bend the lever closed.

ctrain,
Some of the hardware kits don't have the levers fully bent. It should make a perfect 180. If not you need to bend it closer but like DW said don't bend it tight against the cable. Use vise grips to bend it a little at a time.

The spring is between the plastic guide and the lever. Should the tab be bent enough to keep the cable in but not tight on it?

That is correct. With the cable and ball installed on the lever the spring will keep tension on the cable and the ball won't slip out.

Tracdog I think maybe he doesnt have the short end of lever engaged in shoe.
ctrain is the lever pointed towards the opposite wheel or is it pointed more towards the rear of car?
ctrain - look at the angle relationship between the cable and lever it should be aprox.40 degrees not 90 and not 120-does that make sense?
That lever should be way back against bearing housing.Really once the cable is slid in place it should be in no danger of slipping out-in fact once its in place it can be a PITA to get out.Check to see if the short end is engaged in shoe.
Tracdog I havnt seen any levers not closed up (yet)what manufacture is doing this?

Good point, I didn't think about that. Here's a pic of MainVette's trailing arm showing how it should look.

Or he may have the lever on the wrong side.

I don 't know who the manufacturer was but they were being sold thru LoneStar. Theywere quite aways from being 180. I had to close every one of them. LoneStar now produces their own levers and they fit perfect.

That's exactly how mine looks. So I have it right. Yeah.......
My spring seems to be longer than the picture (which by the way is a GREAT picture), so the angle the section of cable between the lever and guide is greater. Maybe that's my problem. Wonder if I should cut off some of the spring.

You don't want to cut the spring. You'll need to adjust everything first. Adjust the parking brakes first with the cable unhooked. Then install the cable and adjust it just to the point of starting to move the levers. Then back a couple of turns and see how the pull on the handle feels. The springs are what pulls the cable back and releases the shoes.
Mike

The picture belongs to MaineVette. I just happen to see it looking at his restoration pics.

Here is a picture of my cable/spring. I got the cable from Ecklers. Do you think the spring is ok as it is?

It's ok at the moment. Now you need to adjust the front cable to take up th slack. Everything should straighten out then.
