Im currently rebuilding a 73 corvette and over the summer i built a new 350 engine. It seemed to be going well until i started to take the old engine out, when it dawned on me that with the manifold that i had put on the new engine the the whole engine height would be about 2 - 4 inches higher than the original engine causing clearance problems with the stock small block hood. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas about possible solutions like switching to an l88 hood or possibly getting new motor mounts that lower the engine, or maybe even getting a lower sittiing air cleaner. Does anyone have any ideas about what i can do to solve my predicament.
what kind of intake are you using? I just installed a zz383 with edelbrock air gap rpm manifold and 1 1/2 drop air cleaner , 3 inch filter 770 cfm holley street avenger carb and everything fits under the hood of my 78 l-48
Hey how did you do it?
Looks to me like every one has hood clearance issues with taller than stock manifolds. I myself was prepared to limit my intake selection to performer only. I don't have the stock airfilter unit. Not a drop design either just a 2 inch Mr Gasket type filter on present GM stock intake.
The drop filter you mention, does it work with all Holley 4 bbl carbs
Like the 770 CFM
im using an air gap edelbrock manifold. not sure which one exactly but if it is mportant to know this i can find out. also im using a holley street avenger carb.
I am not sure where the break is but I think the earlier C3's do not have the hood clearance of the later models.
I've heard the same thing. Specifically, among all C3 BASE model hoods (in other words, not including L88 or aftermarket hoods), the '73s to '79s offer the most clearance. I've heard some people suggest the '80 to '82 hoods are taller, so take this info with a grain of salt.
Yah it would be nice to know exactley which manifold you tucked in there! You must have the L82 hood though from what it seems is the most logical choice for taller intakes
ckeckervette,
the air cleaner i'm using is a holley 1 1/2 drop base air 14inch diameter air cleaner with 3 inch element. i bought it at advance auto for about $39.00. only have about 3/4 clearance but that is enough. i was worried too but it all worked out. i was about to buy another hood!
air cleaner is sitting on holley 770 cfm street avenger manifold with edelbrock air gap rpm manifold.
Are the hoods different between L48 and L82 cars built from '73 to '79? I thought they were exactly the same, but now that I think about it, I'm not sure.
Nope, same hoods. It's a good looking hood too in my opinion. It would be cheaper for me to make my stock hood work, and rig up some type of cold air induction. I don't like the stock twin snorkel with hoses setup.
Edelbrock air gap manifold, Demon carb, 1/2" billet spacer used for the clearence needed to use vacuum connection off the manifold here. Use a drop base air cleaner from a 72 and you'll have no problem.....
Typically, I think Demons are a little bit taller than Holleys; at least at the surface where the breather sits. If that's the case, you should have no clearance issues. Others here will know better than me.

I have run the Edelbrock Victor Jr. with the stock 1970 350/350hp air cleaner and hood with no problems.
