could be the underhood gauge is reading higher because of the hotter ambient temps under the hood?
could be the temp sender gauge going to the dash is not reading correctly.

best thing is to find out what your REAL operating temp is to see which gauge is giving you the more accurate reading.
Pick up an IR temp gun and see what the temp really is.

As per the procedure once mentioned by Tom DeWitt I now check operating temp by shooting the upper rad hose housing on the radiator and by shooting the t-stat housing on the intake and averaging the two temps - this should give you a pretty accurate temp you are running at.

I know when you take the temp. sending unit out of the head and install it in the intake manifold just in front of the goose neck. You will have 15* to 20* drop in temp. on your dash gage. Pick up an IR temp gun and see what the temp really is. They are great. Being that my ZZ4 has a much smaller temp. sending unit than the stock unit. I installed another temp gage under the hood. Just to see what the head temp. is. It average 15* to 20* more than the gage on the dash. Life is beautiful.

Default I installed the sensor on the manifold...

on my 68. Since I have Vortec heads and the sensor would not fit in the head.
According to my computer, which uses the other sensor on the manifold, my gauge reads about 20-25 degrees cooler than the computer.
