I know this may sound stupid but here goes.I am only a novice but have found this site to be helpful in may ways to me.
I have a 1982 C/E. I notice that while driving I have a strong smell of exhaust fumes in my car. I have had it put on the lift and has the mechanic checked the exhaust system. There are no leaks in the exhaust system.
Have it checked again by someone else. Also check manifold gaskets and the seal at the ear of the hood. You may be leaking at the manifold and sucking it into the cabin thru the cowl vent on the passenger side.
check the evap canister, it's between the drivers side fender gill and the frame, a large round can. Maybe it's full of fuel and the purge system is not working properly.
Hi,
My CE used to run very rich before I had some work done on the fuel injection. The smell of the rich exhaust is drawn into the car for some reason. I don't know of any areas on my car's body that would leak exhaust and the exhaust system itself is sound. Have your mechanic look at the injection system, it could be as simple as a bad coolant sensor.
Good luck,
Tom
Thanks for the help on this one. i took it back to the dealers they checked the system I have no leaks in the exhaust system.
I will check this can out this weekend and see what I can find out.........
I had the ejectors cleaned last week , let me say that differently I had the throttle bodies cleaned and changed all the filters. I also replaced the plugs too. I cant seem to put my finger on it but I still smell those damn fumes , however i did notice when I put the switch to vent it seems to lighten up a bit.
About 2 months ago i puit a new fuel pump in and a new fuel relay. We check that out put a gage in the fuel line and its puting out about 12 PSI I believe. But I notice that every once and a while when I step on the gas i get a miss or it cuts out but it is interment.
So what ever i got going on I am closing it on it I hope.
Some background on the car it only has 41k originial miles it sat for quite a while. So i fighure things are just dried out perhaps. Thats why the fuel pump went bad they left the tank empty for years. I cleaned the tank out and put a new fuel pump in along with the relay it seemed to do fine for 2 months now i am getting this interment problem......
you are a genius my seal is not even touchinh the glass at the top all the way around.........looks like I found the problem or I should say you did thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!
If you have had to replace the hatchback struts, there is a possibility that when using reproduction or new manufactured struts, they could have bent the hinges due to the stress when struts are compressed.
I found a set of original struts at Corvette Salvage when I replaced mine, as the repro struts put a lot of pressure on the hinges and caused my hatch not to close properly. After all the stories of the repro struts causing bent hinges, I didn't want to tempt fate.
Apparently also, if you have replacement hinges, they may also tend to bend easier. Fortunatley I haven't had to do that...
I'm the guy who made the replacement hinges. I made a set for my Wife's CE and made a few more sets while I was at it, but they are all gone, sorry.
Occationally, original hinges show up on e-bay for rediculous prices. The last set I saw on there was $500 and the guy claimed they were 'not sprung', but that's BS, they ALL stretch open.
All of the CE's I was involved with had the hinge mounts and/or latches butchered up to different degrees by people trying to get enough adjustment to seal the glass. It won't work because the hinges just stretch more.
You can take the hinges off and squeeze them back to their original dimension and reinstall them. If you take off the gas struts, you can't use the hatch, but at leaste the hinges might keep the glass sealed.
The new window seal is still available in repro, but it's a bit expensive. .
To answer the "where to find a seal" question. There are numerous sources. Be very careful who you buy this thing from though. I have heard of unsuspecting souls paying the traditional $200 or so only to recieve a seal stamped "Made in China". (I'm still trying to figure out when China made Vettes, but hey) To add insult to injury, they do not fit very well and look even worse.
Corvette Rubber and GMPartsDirect.com both have positive feedback associated with their rear seals.
Hope this helps!

Simpson, if you're not planning to make any more hinges, do you have any drawings or measurements that you could send to the CE guys who need them? I'm sure just about any machine shop could make them.
I don't have a CE, not looking to get one, but I know that this is a common problem.
Merely going by what I heard when I bought my pistons. I was warned off of repro hinges because they bend. Haven't had to go there, thank goodness. Glad to have you clear that issue up, since you made the repros.

No, he made a few sets of custom hinges that are NOT going to bend. The stock ones are made of cheap metal that easily bends, so it's actually the stock ones that bend and not his custom hinges. There are no true reproduction hinges for the CE, so whoever told you that was misinformed.
I have re-thought this process out all over again since I have read so much info here on this site. I think I may need to have this professionaly done.
Do you have any idea who or where I should take the car to?? Maybe a glass place??
I got the hatch opened last night and I looked eveerything over here is what i have found.
First the glass does not seal all the way around the the seal at all. from the top and both sides I can see daylight.
I would not know a new set of hinges fom old but what I can tell you is that they are black at the top. Now as for the struts I think they may be new they look new and I remember when I bought the car that the litte plastic piece that goes around the botton of the strut was loose. I fixed that but any way I think they are new.
In no way am I that good to take this job on so got any ideas who
to take it too.
P S I went out to the garage this morning and i took some pics I looked the glass seal over closely I noticed that the glass does not seal at all all the way from the top and around both side of the seal, in fact i can see daylight all the way around
