Default New to forms?

OK not real sure how to use the site but i am gonna try to learn. Anyway my question is i just bought a 79 vette for $500 its in really good shape. Motor and tranny both need to be rebuilt. I was wanting to know what other motor and tranny's i could put in just to get it up and running why i get the Numbers matching engine and tranny rebuilt. I know the car has been sitting for aleast 2 years (maybe more). It was kept in the garage so over all its in good shape. Can i post pics? If i can i will post pics soon thanks.

How about a Chevy engine? And maybe a Muncie 4-speed. Or TH-350. Or TH-400. All crazy ideas, but I bet you could make them work.

Ill give you $600 for it and you wont have to bother learning how to post on a forum

At the top of the page there is a FAQ Tab (Frequently asked questions) Which will be a great help and also the "User CP" (CP= control panel) which will allow you to select your forum options.
I suguest you fill in a brief profile, year, engine, general location ect: The search tab is probably the best tool you will ever need...I always check the Advanced search and the "Archives" box when searching as it will display older posts.

Welcome to the best Corvette forum that exists
There are many options as far as the engine/transmission are concerned
My suggestion is to read read read and then read some more in this section of the forum

You will have a Masters degree in C3 Corvettes in a few months (or years) ........ there is a ton of knowledge on this forum along with many many nice people that can answer any question you can come up with

As far as posting images you can get a free picture host by signing up at http://photobucket.com/

If you need help posting pics just yell and someone will walk you through it

Congrats on the new Corvette

Sounds like a sweet deal. Since the 79 is not computer controlled, it is one of the earsier ones to work one. Any pre-86 Chevy 350 blocks will work just fine for you. Got my current 4bolt main block out of a 85 3/4 ton Suburban and built it. I replaced my TH350 tranny with a Bowtie 2004R Overdrive. I've kept my original numbers matching block and tranny just in the small chance that I'd ever sell my 79 and someone would want them. If you decide to build your original engine, then it shouldn't cost more than building any other 350. Most here on the Forum would suggest using heads with smaller than stock combustion chambers (maybe 64cc vs stock 76cc) to get the compression up. Also there's lots of opinions here on which cam to use. I'm using Dart Iron Eagle 180 heads and flat top 2 valve releaf pistons and have a compression ratio of 9.7:1. I use premium gas with no detentation problems. My cam is Comp Cam's XE262.

Ok thanks for the reply's. After I posted i was just looking and it really aint all the different than another car forum I am a member of. Anyway I bought the car because it's a 79 and i was born in 79. I think that makes even more special for me. I got it form my uncle who bought it in 86. So its only a 2 owner car and i just happen to know both of them. I am going to rebuild both the engine and tranny but not goning to change anything i wanna keep everything stock. I will however be putting in a engine and tranny out of another car still not sure what car. 1 question i have is the tranny its a auto what cars should i be looking to be a donor? Thanks ever1 and I will try posting pics soon.

Nick welcome to the forum. It sounds like you got a steal on the car. What was wrong with the engine and transmission that is in the car? Why not try to get the car running unless it was parked for a blown engine or transmission? Is it the L-48 with auto? There are plenty of smart people here to answer all of your questions.

My uncle parked it because the motor was going out and the tranny was slipping really really bad. All i know for sure is its L-82 with an auto tranny.

It seems like a lot of wasted time and money putting another engine and transmission in the car. Most transmissions can be rebuilt in a day also you can carry that original L-82 to a rebuilder and they also can overhaul the engine in a couple of days and that way you are only removing the units one time and will not have to spend money on another engine and transmission which might not be any good. While everything is out it will give you a couple days or a week to detail the engine compartment. Just my $.02 cents worth.
