Ive just rebuild all of the power steering components (pump, valve, piston) and put all new power steering lines. I have purged all the air out with the front on jack stands moving the steering wheel from lock to lock as i have read to do. The problem is it still doesnt work. I disconnected the cylinder from the frame and had my son turn the steering wheel while the engine was running as i observed the cylinder not moving at all. What is a good way to troubleshoot this problem assuming that i rebuilt everything right. It was pretty straightforward in putting the new parts in with no problems...Any help would be much appreciated.
Hmmm, sounds like the PS valve has a problem. You sure you got it all back together right?
Crack a fluid line on the cylander and make sure you have juice to it.
Thanks for the reply..I cracked the lines and it does have fluid in the cylinder...just doesnt move...maybe i need to start replacing each component and see which one does the trick...would getting a new or rebuilt one depreciate the value of the car not having a stock or original part.
well, verifying pressure would be a good thing, would need a T with a pressure gauge on the high side. When you move the steering wheel does the pump make any noise?
When checking power steering fluid pressure, make sure that you have a gage that goes over 1100 psi. You need to turn the steering wheel to full lock to dead head the pump and develope full pressure. Don't hold it at full lock for more than a few seconds.
Check to make sure that you installed the flow control valve in the pump correctly. First the spring, then the flow control valve with the hex head screw first, then the discharge fitting.
If you need a new power steering pump, you will be able to transfer your original reservoir to the new or remanufactured pump housing. This will retain all of the date coding, stickers, etc from your original.
