Default Clutch Hydro Conversion-How to.

After doing the hydro conversion and while doing it I figured out how to do it better, easier and with less modifications. I used a Novack conversion kit made for jeep and had to make the hose assy and I had to cut the floorboard where the clutch fork was hitting

it but it is all done and I am happy.

Now for the correct and easy way. I purchased a bell housing off ebay

that looked interesting as it had a place to mount a slave cyl. After it came in I hooked it to the 454 I had pulled, no problems. I then hooked the old t-10 up and no problems.
I did some research and the bell housing is for 1984 to 1988 VETTE (Casting #14048867). So get a bell housing for the 84-88 vette, with clutch fork and pivot rod, purchase a clutch master cyl for 85-89 chevy 3/4 to 1 ton 454. Purchace the hydro line for the 85-89 chevy. Mate the line to the slave cyl. The clutch master cyl rod will be exactly 1 inch to long

,

cut it and weld back together. It will attach allmost exactly where the rod came out of the fire wall. Use stainless bolts and washers. You will have to drill out a little pushing the master cyl down as far as it will go. You will need a remote reservoir. You will have to take a pair of pliers and turn the tube coming out of the master cyl towad the fender. You will have to remove the power brake booster and master cly. YThen bleed the crap out of it, it takes a long time to bleed, Make sure to bench bleed also. You can email me for more information. Paul

A quick dumb guy question.....will this conversion make the clutch more like my accord as opposed to my C3 (which makes my knee hurt???) If so - that is gonna be a must-do mod, since otherwise I will have to get rid of the car by the time I am in my 50's....

You will be able to hold it down at a red light just like your Honda.

This is one of the best things you can do and is easier than some might think. I did mine and with the centerforce II clutch I can just about push it in with my big toe.

For a line to connect the master cylinder to the slave cylinder a normal brake line works great. That is a normal Steel line. Just wrap the brake line around a piece of pipe a few times to form a coil and then connect it. The wrap around coil gives it flex.
Your bought line is very expensive.
As for bleeding the clutch master it should bleed itself. I have done a number of these conversions and never actually bled any of them, gravity did the job.

The master cyl from the 86 chevy 3/4 ton uses metric threads and the slave cyl on the 84 vette uses a whole different type conection. It is a round piece with a hole in it that a bolt goes through.

When I made the conversion from auto to manual 5 speed I bought a bellhousing, master and slave cylinder to fit an 85 one ton truck and ot works great. Very little pressure to hold ithe pedal down at red lights. This is a great upgrade and I used a steel brake line to connect the cylinders like Norval suggested!

Do you have pic of the 85 bellhousing. Your way sounds a lot eaiser than mine. Were you able to us a brake line or did you have to buy the chevy hose?

The chevy hose is about $90 CDN and a brake line is $2 Bernie used the brake line like I suggested.
As for that thing with the hole in the middle? it is a banjo fitting, easy to come by. I used them with my hydraulic emergency brakes.

I am guessing I went to the wrong parts house as the master cyl had metric threads and all they had were sae. Is metric brake line available??

I went to NAPA and bought the fitting to adapt the brake line to the master cylinder. I went to a junk yard and found a heavy duty 1985 aluminum truck bellhousing with the bracket for the slave already molded as part of the bellhousing. If you cant find one, an adapter is easy to make to attach to a regular bellhousing. The steel brake line is cheap and if you wrap it around a small can a couple of times it will flex with the engine and not break.

I hope this helps a little.

A lot. I see the difference between the Novack kit and the chevy bell housing is that the chevy hook up is about 2 inches futher from the back of the block.
The novack came with a long adjustable rod that I had to add to, to make work. Using the chevy bell housing makes it a lot easier. Just get the fork that is for the chevy bell housing. I did look at a chevy slave cyl at the parts house and one does come with the push rod. Do you have the part number of the adaptor for the brake line?

I'm at work right now. I will see if I have the adapter numbers when I get home tonight. I bought everything from NAPA and fitted everything together with the proper fittings while there.

I am not trying to beat this horse to death, but when I started looking into doing this I could not find the diffinitive answer anywhere. It can be very costly to improvise etc. as I just found out. My system works great but lots of mods involved and I want to convert the 69 I am buying with out all the mods.

I ordered a hose for 84-85 vette today. I went by the chevy dealer and they did not have any in stock. I believe it will mate right up to the 85-89 HD chevy truck clutch master cyl. If it does then this all just got eaiser. As soon as it comes in I will put together and let you all know.

The problem is alot of OLD guys like myself who did swaps like this and the hydroboost run post after post on this stuff. New guys come along and eventually you just get tired of going around and around.
I have talked great guys like Bernie through this and eventually you just give up and let the new guys carry the ball.
