Default crankshaft damper ,dumb question

Sorry about this ,but whats the difference between internal and externally balanced crankshaft dampers? and is size important.
I need a new one ,the old one is eating its way through the timing cover!

TIA

Externally balanced dampers are only for the 400ci engine, if you have a 350 (odds are) you need the plain damper with no balancing I think the stock size is 7 and 1/4 inch but do check it. If the outer sleeve has slipped that much it is chewing into the timing cover I would not drive the car or even run the engine until you have fixed it!

Default right balancer?

I just rebuilt a 78 350 4-bolt main and am dropping it into my 80 model.

I had the L48 in there, but the new engine will have alot more power.. I purchased the original 6-3/4" dampener. Should I go with the l-82 8" model instead?

What are the advantages or benefits or is it necessary?

Eric

The smaller dampener will work. Larger diameter is better at dampening, but there is no balance or other problem by sticking to the smaller one. I always highly recommend you either get a GM dampener or a quality aftermarket such as ATI. Under no circumstances should you use a parts-store replacement. These are Chinese and are known to blow apart causing much damage.

and you might have a dang time getting the Chinese models to fit properly. Ask how I know.

I don't think that's entirely true - I have a 350 that's been stroked to a 383 and it uses an 8" externally balanced dampner.

That's because it has a 400 crank. The 400 was the only factor SBC with an external balance system.

Is streetdamper a good make of damper ? Are there any clearance issues running a 8 " on a L-48 ?

You definitely need a puller/installer tool. DO NOT hammer it on.
While its off, replace the front main seal.

Good advice above! A puller will not cost a great deal and will no doubt come in handy at a later stage. It's a little painfull bending over the fender to get access but it is a fairly straight forward job.

Had the same happen to mine this spring.. while I was replacing the damper I pulled the timing cover to make sure it was not damaged by the damper. So I also put a new timing chain set on it and one of the one piece oil pan gaskets and an oil pump. I also replaced the belts and hoses too.

You can "rent" a puller installer from autozone.
