All these issues with having or making sure you don't get the wrong water pump is one of the reasons I made sure I switched to a factory style SBC serp system. It has a specific water pump and only comes in one length. The single serp belt lines up every time, and I'm even deleting two accessories and adding one. It all lines up. Gravy.
Thanks for all the input. I didn't plan on changing out the water pump, just the pulleys and all the accessory brackets. I'll guess that I'll just have to pull them all off and take them to the speed shop to match them up with the new parts. As for the air cleaner top, the K&N filter top is just what I was looking for. Now I just have to figure out what manifold and carb setup I can run under the stock small block hood on my 72.
No. You have one or two more inches in height on the 77 hood over 72 small block hood.
In that case a good low profile manifold is need, plus a drop base air cleaner. I have a Weiand manifold on my Vette right now that is VERY low profile. I had a standard air cleaner originally and had plenty or room, tested with a bar of clay. I wanted a taller filter, so I switched to a drop base. Not only that but I like how they look hugging the engine a little.
Anyway, call a few paces or surf catalogs. They will usually say if it fits a Corvette of your year in most product descriptions.
VCuomo, that is just gorgeous!!!!! Don't tell me that the motor fits under a stock hood! I was wondering, what type of headers are you running? It looks like their shorties in one of the pics.

Binnie77 - I got them from Santa Ana Speed Center in Santa Ana CA. Unfortunately, I don't remember who makes them.
Asianlimodriver - Thanks! The motor doesn't fit under a stock hood - I purchased an aftermarket L88 hood. The shorties that you spotted (good eyes!) were only used while the engine was on the stand so that I could run the spark plug wires (each wire is custom cut-to-length). The engine is now installed in the car with ceramic coated Hedman headers (you can see the driver's side header in the last photo above). Here's a shot of the front of the car so you can see the hood better:

I too just got my L88 hood, and it's great to see painted hoods. I can't wait to see mine in shiny new black. I didn't have clearance problems yet, but now I have the option to go taller without fear of hood clearance as the hard part is done.
Every now and then a buddy and I go to the Pomona Swap Meet - we should meet there next time we go. My buddy and I usually drive our Corvettes (he's got a BB '69) and park in the "classic car" section.
VCuomo - I've been looking at my L88 hood, and sorry for the hijack everyone, but I was wonderign about that dip att he front. Do you find it collects water or have you even ever had it out in the rain? If it did I was thinking of designing some kind of a drain tube that could be routed through the engine bay down to the ground or something.
Durango - I don't drive my 'vette in the rain, but yes it definitely collects water. My buddy's '69 hood has a small hole drilled at the front "point" of the hood (I assume this is "stock", but it may not be). And, if you use an electric fan instead of the stock fan, I think the water would drip out of the hole and miss everything except the frame's front crossmember.
onaqwst - I bought my kit from Santa Ana Speed Center (714-835-6424), and I think that right now they're the only distributor for this particular belt drive kit. They also have the PS pulley that will line up and the alt bracket that works. Also note for this kit that you'll have to use a "standard" water pump (not the Corvette-specific one). Edit: On second look, that link does appear to have the same belt drive as I have. And it also looks like you can use either short or long shaft water pump, depending on the kit you order. But you might want to give S.A. Speed a call - I think their price is less than Black Mountain.
