Default Long vs. Short Water Pump Identification

Hey All,

I need some more help. How do I identify whether I have a long or short water pump. I'm planning on buying some engine dress items at the Pomona Swap meet this sunday. I'm just making up my shopping list. Any input on polished aluminum vs. chrome for the alt/ac brackets and pulleys?

Thanks!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe all Corvettes (C3's) came with the short WP.

Well if you have a clutch/fan, and long pump, the blades would hit the rad core support. All Vettes came with short pumps just for the fan clearance reason. Another way to tell, is you can stick your fingers behind a long, and you can't with a short...

P.S. I'm a fan of chrome, but if you do a little you should do it all in chrome. It will brighten up the engine bay, but if you only have one or two small chrfome things it'll look out of place.

Maybe have a look at March's webpage. They make brackets (polished, aluminum, etc) and serpentine kits. They also have a drawing showing the dimensions of the long and short water pump.

The short pump fits nice and tight up to the timing cover the long pump will leave a gap of about 1" between them.

Default Water Pump ID

Thanks for all of the help. I guess I have a short pump, whether that is good or bad. I'm planning on changing the alt brackets, water pump pulley, crank pulley, ps pump bracket, ac bracket, along with going to a polished (or endurashine) manifold, Demon carb, and eventually chrome alternator. I'm hoping this will look real nice when done. If anyone has any idea of where I can find a chrome or polished air cleaner that has the normal round filter, but also has what looks like a filter element for the top I'd appreciate it.

Once again, thanks for all the help.

March is good if you've got the loot to spend... and lots of loot you will spend.

I bought this Summit brand alternator bracket for $78. Works great and its alot cheaper than March ($117).

As for water pump, I prefer Aluminum... not a huge chrome fan here.

Good luck!

Do a Forum search on water pump. The C3 pump is neither "short" or "long". I think I remember that our pumps are either 5/8" or 3/4" longer than the "short" pumps. The other difference is the shaft size.

I was never under the impression there were three lengths. I've only seen short or long.

I don't believe that there is a "Corvette" water pump. I think later years (71+ ?) updated with a larger shaft size (3/4" vs 5/8" for the earlier cars), but the casting remained the same. I have several data points to justify my statement:

1. Chevy "By the Numbers" books-list the same WP PN for 68-69 Corvette as earlier (pre-69) MY other models.
2. Parts outlet websites (I looked up autozone) list the same WP PN for a 68 Camaro small block as a 69 Corvette, but a different PN for a 71+ Corvette. Another parts store I frequent says the only difference is between the 68 Camaro & 69 Corvette was that the 69 had dual bolt patterns for the WP pulley.
3. When I purchased a new Delco WP from a dealer for my 69, I ordered one for a 1970 LT-1 car. It's a short leg WP with 5/8" shaft, dual bolt pattern pulley flange. When I purchased a March underdrive pulley set for short WP small block Chevy (not the Corvette specific set listed for 71-82), the WP pulley had a 5/8" pilot and if I remember correctly everything lined up.

The only difference I've seen in early WP's is that those intended for high revving small blocks (used with deep dual groove pulley) had a different flange location on the WP shaft, but only different by about 1/8". When I switched to the factory deep groove pulley set I had to space the pulley a bit from the WP flange.

Maybe the "Corvette" water pump is the 71+ with the 3/4" shaft, because by that time all other Chevy's were using long water pumps.

My 78 takes a short pump and that has a 3/4" shaft. So make sure you get the right size pulley. I like chrome it's alot easier to keep clean. A heavy coat of wax before it goes on the engine. Aluminum to hard to keep clean

If the alternator is on the left use the short pump, on the right it takes the long pump

Its strange that someone claims there is 3 sizes as I bought an 81 with
a goodwrench crate installed. When I went to replace to the alt and
power steering belts I had to move the alt and power steering forward
about 5/8" to run the belts true.

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294790850

for the air cleaner

and one of these

for the top

the short water pump for C3 was different than the standard short pump for other GM vehicles, if you don't get the correct one the pulleys will not line up exactly and throw off access. belts. Be sure to get the pump for your make/model of C3 and use the original pulleys. You could probably go to the standard short pump but you would likely need to replace pulleys and acees. brackets.

Having just redone my engine, I'll give you the following advice: If you want the "chrome" look, purchase an Edelbrock pump with the Endurashine finish. It won't pit, really does look just like chrome, and there's no polishing - you just wipe it down with a mild cleaner. I now have all the following with the Endurashine finish (and it all looks great): Air Gap dual-quad intake manifold, two Thunder series 500CFM carbs, and water pump. I've been told that you can also now get Edelbrock valve covers and air cleaner covers in Endurashine, but they weren't available when I bought mine, so I had them chromed. They match perfectly with the Endurashine parts.

And no, I don't work for Edelbrock!
