Long vs. Short Water Pump Identification
I need some more help. How do I identify whether I have a long or short water pump. I'm planning on buying some engine dress items at the Pomona Swap meet this sunday. I'm just making up my shopping list. Any input on polished aluminum vs. chrome for the alt/ac brackets and pulleys?
Thanks!

Well if you have a clutch/fan, and long pump, the blades would hit the rad core support. All Vettes came with short pumps just for the fan clearance reason. Another way to tell, is you can stick your fingers behind a long, and you can't with a short...

P.S. I'm a fan of chrome, but if you do a little you should do it all in chrome. It will brighten up the engine bay, but if you only have one or two small chrfome things it'll look out of place.
Once again, thanks for all the help.

What did you mean with this? I can't visualise it. Got a pic of what you mean?
I bought this Summit brand alternator bracket for $78. Works great and its alot cheaper than March ($117).

As for water pump, I prefer Aluminum... not a huge chrome fan here.
Good luck!
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I was never under the impression there were three lengths. I've only seen short or long.
I don't believe that there is a "Corvette" water pump. I think later years (71+ ?) updated with a larger shaft size (3/4" vs 5/8" for the earlier cars), but the casting remained the same. I have several data points to justify my statement:
1. Chevy "By the Numbers" books-list the same WP PN for 68-69 Corvette as earlier (pre-69) MY other models.
2. Parts outlet websites (I looked up autozone) list the same WP PN for a 68 Camaro small block as a 69 Corvette, but a different PN for a 71+ Corvette. Another parts store I frequent says the only difference is between the 68 Camaro & 69 Corvette was that the 69 had dual bolt patterns for the WP pulley.
3. When I purchased a new Delco WP from a dealer for my 69, I ordered one for a 1970 LT-1 car. It's a short leg WP with 5/8" shaft, dual bolt pattern pulley flange. When I purchased a March underdrive pulley set for short WP small block Chevy (not the Corvette specific set listed for 71-82), the WP pulley had a 5/8" pilot and if I remember correctly everything lined up.
The only difference I've seen in early WP's is that those intended for high revving small blocks (used with deep dual groove pulley) had a different flange location on the WP shaft, but only different by about 1/8". When I switched to the factory deep groove pulley set I had to space the pulley a bit from the WP flange.
Maybe the "Corvette" water pump is the 71+ with the 3/4" shaft, because by that time all other Chevy's were using long water pumps.

a goodwrench crate installed. When I went to replace to the alt and
power steering belts I had to move the alt and power steering forward
about 5/8" to run the belts true.
