Default Timing Light, Dwell Meter- Recommendations?

I'd like a dialback light, with dwell, with tach (from what I've read). But I've never used one - adjusting the timing is new to me. So I don't exactly know what I'm buying. Any recommendations on what to look for?

For an excellent timing light that will also read dwell (as well as rpm and other functions), the Equus light is the way to go. It's not cheap (about $200), but it will do everything you want and need to do during a complete tuning process. Check out Summit part number EQU-5568. It's accurate, and very good quality.

My second timing light was the type that had the digital readout, advanced timing function, and rpm/dwell readout in the hand unit itself. The dial back feature is what I realized I needed the most, in order to check timing at 32 - 36 degrees all in by 3000 rpm.

My first timing light was the cheap version, at $29.95. Nothing wrong with it, but it did not have the dial back feature, digital readout, rpm, dwell etc. built in. So in essence I wasted the $30 on the first one, only to get what I needed later.

Morale of the story??? Get what you need for the long term. It may be cheaper that way.

Thanks Lars! It's too bad my car is not fast enough to drive to Colorado from New Zealand for a tuning/learning session at your garage/bar... I love learning hands-on, and it sounds like you're the guy in the know with this stuff. Plus I would have brought plenty of beers.

per lars recomendation last year i got the equus on ebay for about165. it is very easy to use and digitally displays rpm ans well as letting you dial in advance so you dont need to have a degreed balancer. it really makes adjusting the idle mixture screw on the carbs easy. its very sensative and responsive. it also has a very bright backlight for the screen so you can see what you doing.
