Since my ride is a 79, my oil sender and guage are electrical and easy to test using a volt meter. Anyway to verify the accuracy, I built a mechanical tester unit by buying a cheap liquid filled guage and some misc tubing and fittings from the local hardware store. You could use such a device to at least check your pump. Anyway here's a bump. Maybe others may suggest ways to actually check your mechanical sender and guage.

Get to the local parts store and pick up a cheap manual gauge and hook it up (they come with the tubing and connectors)
Mount it where ever you can
This will get you in the ball park and assure you have oil pressure.
