Friday I went to the dealer and, among other parts, ordered a carburetor base gasket. After 30 min of head scratching they apparently figured what part had to be ordered. So, today I went to pick it up, and the "gasket" they had was about 1/4" thick! That can't be right... There's hardly clearance for it now, and I'm sure it won't fit with the performer intake, which will be installed soon. So I asked them if they had a simple paper gasket, and again after 30 min of head scratching they told me that I'd have to order a carb rebuild kit, b/c the gasket was not sold separately. Is this right, or BS? I'd had thought such a mundane part would be sold by the pound... Does anyone have the part number of the correct gasket? You know, after so much head scratching, it's hard to believe they know what they're talking about...
Hi Pedro
The carb gasket used on the 74's is the thick one. I've got one on the car now and another that I took off. It provides the proper distance for the choke rod on the stock manifold and if you use a paper one the choke would be way off. I don't know the setup for an Edelbrock because they use an adapter for the choke (I think). Maybe you should give them a call and see what their recommendations are. They might even have the correct gasket for you. Good luck.
The gaskets are at least 1/4'' thick and they are sold seperately. I also have the performer intake. I wasn't comfortable with the clearance after I installed the intake but a lot of guys are OK with it. Do the putty thing before and after your done and before you drop the hood and decide for yourself.
Thanks a lot guys! I have a paper gasket on my car now, and it seems to be a tight fit already, so I never thought that thick gasket would fit. I'll go back to the dealer tomorrow, and buy it.
Check out my website. I have the performer intake (#3701), with the thick carb base gasket. No clearance problems at all. You will have to fabricate your own choke rod (no problem with a pair of needlenose pliers and a thick wire coat hanger). http://www.albertpenello.com/vette
Re: Carb base gasket question (Corellian Corvette)
Albert,
Thanks for your response. Good to hear (one more time) that everything will fit under the hood. You have some great pics on your website, and your engine compartment looks great! Where did you find the chrome choke coil cover?

Re: Carb base gasket question (Pedro'74)
If for any reason you feel you need to use a thin gasket, let me know and I'll send you one for free - I have several laying around. But use the thick one if you can.
