Hello Any and All. I have a 71 Vette with the right rear spindle and wheel bearings completely removed. Couldnt get the left because it just wont budge! The rear suspension is also removed except for the spring and trailing arms.
I am finishing an MBA program and still working so I have no time to finish it and need to get it towed about 10 blocks to a garage. No one can tell me how to tow a Corvette with no rear wheels without hooking onto the rear bumber and destroying it like we used to do with our toy cars when we were kids. I thought maybe someone would have come up with a way by now.
Has anyone here heard of a similar situation? How did they work it out? Thanks in advance for any help...I miss my Car.
The pickup coil in my vette died on day and I was forced to call a tow truck when I couldn't get parts at 9 P.M. Its been a while since I had anything towed amd I was very concerned about what kind of truck they were going to send. Well it turns out my fears were unfounded. Pretty much every car made these days has a plastic bumper like my 76 vette. As a result, their isn't many cars they can pick up using an old hook and chain tow truck.
Now they have an extension that sildes in under the car and they pick it up by the wheels. They never touched the body or under carriage. I was impressed!
Edit: Of course Its now that I catch the "No rear wheels part"
That might make it a little tougher... Might help kb2fzq.

That is a tough one. You could call a few local tow companies and get their opinion-talk to the owner. Obviously cars lose wheels and spindles in wrecks and must be loaded. Maybe they could get it onto a dolly and pull it onto a rollback. Maybe you could find somebody to make a "house call" and put it together enough so it would roll again.
If you can't find a tow company with some kind of frame dolly to get the car loaded onto a flatbed - the service manual does show how to pick up a '71 from the rear bumpers using a 2x4 (or 6) accross the vertical ribs of the bumpers and a conventional tow arrangement.

The kind of tow truck you mentioned will tow the car backwards as well, as I had mine towed that way twenty miles to a garage. The car tracked real nice and it did not scrape the front air dam at all.
Thanks to all...I dont know what I am going to do. The right rear control are is completely disassembled. Bearings and spindle basically fell out when I was taking it all apart. The left side is stuck like chuck! The races are out and to top it off I have lost the washer-like shim that goes between the long tubular spacer and inner bearing. Can you say "in too deep"? I would have to re assemble the spindle/bearings and then reconnect the rear spring to the control arms just to get towed as described above. How does a tow dolly work? Where is the lift point on the car? Has anyone used one before?
