Default Rebuilding a Carb

The BIGGEST and most IMPROTANT part of rebulding a carb, ANY CARB is that it is CLEANED PROPERLY! Take it apart and soak it in a bucket of Carb Cleaner for most of a day then hose it off and blow it DRY and then put it together. CLEAN is the main word here. All pieces need to soak for a long time to break lose all the stuff that builds up in the passages.

From what I have read Edelbrock discontinued the QJ replacement and the prices for used ones skyrocketed on Ebay.

I did read they were going to resume production so It lookt like it was true

$400 is insane
The local rebuilder who did some glass blasting/coating and throttle shaft re-bores for me gets $170 for a rebuilt unit (no core charge) and does great work.

I couldn't believe how filthy mine was, I sprayed it down and scrubbed it really good before puting it back together.

The Edelbrock #1406 has been a very dependable carb for the boulevard-cruising kind of driving I do. Starts easily and no bogs or hesitations. But I will have to disagree with others who say it is a bolt-on-and-go situation:
-note need for external filter (does not have internal)
-kick-down linkage (for automatics) will have to be adjusted
-accelerator linkage will have to be adjusted
-note entry of fuel line at back of carb, not front as Q-Jet
-to use that Russell fuel line and filter you need AN adaptors at the fuel pump end
-you can fab a steel line if you are good with a bender
-stock air cleaner housing does not clear electric choke in some cases (mine for example)

If you are comfortable with this type of tweaking (and additional costs) I would say go for it. But I thought I would put up a few yellow flags.

Original setup.

Thanks Paul,
more "new" info. I guess there is no such thing as "new" bolt on and go.
Although i have a 4spd and the items you mention are pretty minor, thanks!!
