I noticed a lot of reference to the C3 rear ends as "Corvette rear end" or similar. Is it a diff unique and engineered for the vettes only, or is it an adaptation of a more popular diff? For example...a camaro has a 10-bolt, a C4 has either a Dana 36 or 44, etc....
65-79 used a 10 bolt, specific to corvette, Eaton carriers were used and various changes appeared over the run. 63-64 were similar but used a Dana carrier that didn't hold up. 80-82's are Dana units, all aluminum.
Is it unique as far as the pumpkin goes, or just the backplate?
And what years interchange....I have a '72 and I'd like to see if I can pick up a diff with a lower ratio than my 3.36's(or is it 3.31.....my stuff's at home).
Thanks for the info, guys.

The pumpkin is unique. You can swap 63-79, with 65-79 being preferable.
The ring gear size is unique to corvette, the pumkin as well due to the IRS. The 63-64 housings are narrower but can be built as strong as any 65-79 as long as you use the right parts. The 65-70 spiders are weaker then the 71-79 spiders but the 65-70 clutches are 100% better.
There are 2 different size pinion yokes used and 2 styles of side yokes used. You should have 336's if you have a base eng with M-20. You can use 273,308,336,355,370,373, 390,411,and 433's with your 3 series carrier in the car now. The 390's are Richmonds, the 370 can be Yukon,GM, or Richmond. The 373 are stronger and are Tom's(US Gear).
