Default Rear end noise

Our 78 is making a scrapping noise that seems to be coming from the back. It is very loud when I'm making a right hand turn. When I turn left I haven't heard it yet. I'm thinking the clutches in the rear diff. however, before I tear into it. I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this problem.

Default Diff noise

Hi
I had a chatter in the diff a while ago and what I did was empty the old oil out of the diff (you need to suck out with a pump if you don't have a drain plug) put in some fresh diff oil and limitted slip diff lube and haven't had a problem since . Certainly worth a try as a rebuild could be expensive. Pete

Same noise here (scrapping noise)...took her to Valvoline oil change place, they replaced the rearend oil and added new posi fluid, no muss, no fuss, 42 bucks, went and did 30 minutes of figure 8's and it's been nice and quiet...do this before "rip and tearing" on the diff.....

Posi hammer or chatter usually is from a standing start around a corner when the diff is hot. Could be that but check to see that the side yokes are not hitting the diff due to wear. If you have a lot of endplay in them that could be your problem and that is something you want to fix before it wrecks the housing.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like I will change the oil in the Diff first. The yokes are new, and the end play is fine. I've changed the oil in the diff once a few years ago when I replaced the rear spring and then again a year later when I replaced the yokes due to end play. The rear was quiet afterwards. We took it on a trip afew weeks ago, after about 200 highway miles is when I noticed it. On the trip home is ran fine, just the scrapping noise when I cornered.

As with anything, I'm going to start with the easy stuff first. Once again thanks

I was having the same problem and had my U-Joints replaced in the rear. Havn't heard the noise since...
