Default Engine Identification 69 T-Top

I am interested in 69 corvette at a local restoration shop. How do I determine if it is the correct engine, paint, etc. Is there a build plate on the car that will give me this information.

Thanks for the help.

The VIN can give you some info if you know how to read it.
The color is on the door plate.
If you can Identify what the car is supposed to be you can ready the numbers off the block to determine if that is what it really is.

For '69, the serial number(VIN) will only tell if it's a coupe or convertible and the build sequence ...

The trim tag (driver door pillar) will tell you the vehicle factory build date, interior and exterior paint colors.

The engine cast number (rear driver side) and cast date (rear passenger side) will tell you if that's the correct block for the car.

The front, passenger side, pad stamping numbers will tell you the engine build date with the suffix code ... located next to these numbers will be the car serial number, if factory original.

The transmission (passenger side maincase reading in a vertical position) has the build date and the car serial number.

Engine assembly date (front pad) and transmission date must be before the trim tag date to be considered original, and/or numbers matching.

There are a few books that will help you decipher the numbers, but if you post the trim tag information, the engine cast number, the engine cast date, the front pad numbers and the transmission numbers, you'll get plenty of feedback.
Would even be better if you get pictures, and post them also ....

good luck ...

I have an auto tranny. Could not locate numbers as explained on main case. Is a auto tranny different? Does an auto tranny have the car's vin as part of the code?

The original automatic trans will have a partial VIN, on the driver's side, flat pad just above the pan.

A small number of '69 high horsepower cars were factory-equipped with a special turbo 400 (CY), these are both rare and desireable. The transmission code will be on a stamped metal plate attached to the passenger side of the trans (not the VIN...see driver's side).

I didn't think the TH350's had a partial VIN. I am going to crawl under that bad dude tonight and take another look. Is there a build date included in this number.

What type of coding should I be looking for?

All trannies originally had the same partial VIN stamp that was applied to the engine, also applied to the tranny.

Btw, you should have a Turbo 400 as did all automatic C3 Corvettes through 1975.

It is possible however that the when the engine swap was made, that they also changed the tranny.

I think they do...but all '69 automatics were THM-400, anyway!

something like 69 CY 1667 on the stamped tag passenger side (year, trans. code, date or sequential build number). Again, partial VIN on driver's side just above pan (upside down?).

The original TH400 in my '68 has a metal identification plate on it with VIN derivative stamped on the plate.

What is the difference of a THM400 versus a TH350. How can I indentify that it is a THM400?

You are correct the tranny is shaped like Texas a THM400

This is what I found on the tag

401

CK - 69 3717

The last 7 could be a 2

On the drivers side I found 9S716613.

This matches with my cars VIN.

Does any of this make since?

isn't there a site where one can look up block numbers to see if it was a specific year for a specific car? i thought someone mentioned it a few months back.
