Went out today to start the car (details in sig) this afternoon and it wouldn't start. I didn't even get the dreaded click of death (solenoid attempting to engage).
I turn the key and I get nothing. All other electrical on the car functions correctly. (see note below) 6 monthsago I installed a CVR protoque starter from Jegs and it has performed flawlessly since then.
Here's what I know:
The battey is fresh and strong (chargered current battery and swapped with another--stikll no luck)
Solid ground, solid + connection at starter, solid ignition connection at solenoid
Solenoid is seeing 12v when key its turned--confirmed at solenoid
Getting power at coil
Here's what's odd:
Key buzzer not buzzing when key in ignition and door open (new problem)
Ammetter show huge current drain when tryiong to start car, but no physical action
Here's what I think:
The starter or solenoid is frozen. Why else would I have a huge current draw with no action while trying to start the car. The only problem is that it started perfectly less that a week ago and has no previous indication of failure.
And if the starter is frozen wouldn't I still hear the solenoid click as it receives power?
I'm trying not to tear the whole car apart to fix this one. Is there anything I'm missing? Any advice?
Re: HELP! Vette No Start, Starter Problem? (NVRL8)
was this a hot start? or was it the first start of the day? well, to check the starter, hotwire the sucker. just lay a screwdrive across the the power and the starter terminals, you know that old trick. if the starter goes then, well you're problem is elsewhere. if it dosnt go....then its a safe bet its your starter.
Re: HELP! Vette No Start, Starter Problem? (RJR99SS)
It was the first start of the day (week). And I did take srewdriver and short the solenoid to the primary coming in. And nothing more than a spark, no noise of any sort.
I've never had a starter fail in 6 months, a mini starter nonetheless, with no previous warning.
The only thing throwing me for a loop is the key warning buzzer not working, I didn't know if there was a relay under the hood that could be link to the ignition.

Re: HELP! Vette No Start, Starter Problem? (NVRL8)
Sounds to me like a solenoid problem. You should hear the solenoid if it is getting power. Take it to Auto Zone or somewhere that tests them for free and let them show you if it is the starter.
Re: HELP! Vette No Start, Starter Problem? (Eddie 96)
Nope, can't be the solinoid--when he jumped across the contacts, he took the solinoid out of the picture. The buzzer sounds like another problem to me--from the description, really sounds like a bad starter. I'd pull it and let them test it at the parts store.
Thanks for everyone's help. Even as lazy as I felt about this, I removed the starter and had it tested.
That solenoid worked perfectly, the starter motor was bad. Although it's only 6 months old, JEG's won't cover it under warranty. I have to go through the manufacturer--CVR. They were closed by the time I called.
I still can't believe that it failed after only 6 months with no warning.
