Its a very good idea to have one, although there are way better systems than what your car came with. I am putting on a dual pass heat sync type cooler mounted to the frame under the car in the slipstream.
I spoke with alot of transmission shops here in town and all over the country, and they all told me NOT to use the radiator cooler. They said that the engine coolant flows through the rad at 180-200 degrees right next to the trans cooler in the rad, and brings up trans fluid temps dramatically. They advised to run a separate cooler all together.
Anyone run their vette without the tranny coolant system hooked up? How necessary is it?
Bill
I agree that tranny coolers are absolutely necessary. You can also get the lines from Bowtie. If you drag race or pull loads then an aux cooler is recommended. When I converted over to the BTO 2004R, part of the install was a tranny temp guage and noticed that I needed both the radiator and an aux cooler to keep the tranny in Bowtie's recommended temp range.
I agree with the others that you definitely do not want to disconnect the trans cooler line as that is what helps cool your tranny. Heat is the worst enemy of auto transmissions.
The thing is I just reinstalled my engine after a cam replacement. Got every thing back together and started the engine up to break in the cam and for some strange coincidence the tranny tube under the swing arm spang a leak. It has been about two weeks since I started the re-cam project and I thought I could cut the tubes in a good section and loop a hose between the two to break in the cam and do some driving until I can get a replacement tube assembly.

I know I should be patient.

you can just cut the tube and put a piece of hose with two clamps on it
Looks like this, not on there yet
Using braided lines on it and mounting it to the frame right side under pass seat, should do the trick. I never liked the idea of running tranny juice thru the radiator.
SO - you are talking about mounting this parallel with the frame on the inside of the outer frame rail. Any concerns about heat to passenger ..... and any methods to protect the fins. What brand is it? Last - are you totally circumventing the radiator to cool the tranny? What degree shoudl a tranny run, what are you experiencing now and what do you expect.

A while back I was trying to figure out what I was going to do for an extra tranny cooler and I came accross some posts by another forum member who ran two of these. He put on in each of the holes in the crossmember where the exhaust pipe goes through. I think his name was GrandSportC3 if I'm not mistaken (but I'm not 100% certain). If you aren't running side exhaust this idea obviously wouldn't work.

Inside the frame rail yes. No significant heat transfer to the passenger since it will be in the slipstream under the car and should not generate all that much heat, not worried about the fins. No idea what brand it is and yes I am deleting the radiator cooler system with an aluminum rad with no tranny provision. The tranny should be as cool as you can get it since it dows need heat to work but generates quite a bit of it. I don't know what the operating temp will be but I expact it will be well under normal temps. If one doesn't do it I'll add on a second one.
