The speedometer on my 69 does not work most of the time. Once in a while it moves then craps out. Is this something that I can
repair or should I send this out to the shop? Any input would be appreciated. Does anyone know where to buy
the light sockets for the front courtesy lights?
Thanks in advance. This is a great forum.
speedo cable problem. looks like you'll be droping the dash :yesnod: unless you have cruise(dunno 'bout the 69's), if so that is in the engine compartment on the left of the brake cylender. If you do have cruise, pull out the cable that goes down to the tranny. That is another way to access the cable without dropping the dash. Take it off the tranney(on the drivers side), and pull out the inner cable, if it is broken, or about to break, you need to replace it. On the top end of the cable is a plastic peice(the non-tranny end). If the cable is in good condition, check this plastic peice, The cable might be spinning inside of the peice. The plastic peice should be attached...superglue fixed mine. Worse case sanario, you'll have to replace the speedo entirerly. If that is the case, its only about $30, and it will take an afternoon or two. All major places carry them, ZIP, Ecklers, Mid America...
I've gotten so good at removing my cable I don't even have to pull the dash anymore. My speedometer jumps. I tried EVERYTHING that I could think of.. I pulled the cable out the back of the speedo.. On my 80 I removed the drivers side heat duct and I can reach up and disconnect/connect the cable. You have to push on the tab where the cable connect to the speedo in order for it to release the cable. I pulled the inner cable, cleaned it then tried white silicone, GP grease, wheel bearing grease, I even bouht a tube of graphite cable lube.. it still jumps. Works for a while after I lube it but then it starts jumping again. I'm going to order a new cable and be done with it. The only thing that's holding me back is installing the new cable. I can't see where it comes through the floor.. It's above the tranny somewhere. Decided it was a winter project..
This thread has made me curious. I've seen posts on the forum that unequivocally state that the inner speedo cable can only be pulled out of the jacket from the top (dash) end and lately, a couple people have said it can come out from the transmission end. Does anyone really know what gives? Were two kinds of cable/jacket used during the year? (I'm specifically interested in a '69)
Speedometer inner cables are removed from the upper (dash) end. Some Corvettes use 2 piece speedometer cables with a "junction" at about the middle of the overall cable length. Nevertheless, the inner cable is removed from the upper end of each cable. I don't know of any Corvette that the cable removes from the lower (transmission) end.
I think that you'll find that those speedometer repair kits (actually, complete new speedometer head assemblies) are not so easy to come by anymore. As far as I know, all of the "kits" sold by the Corvette vendors were GM/Delco-sourced. Delco Electronics (i.e. the entity that used to make these parts) discontinued production some time ago and the supply has "dried up". As far as I know, there is currently NO alternative source for these parts. So, I don't know how speedometers and tachometers are going to be serviced in the future.
Mine was/is still bouncing. Changed the whole thing in about an hour. Tried pulling it and lubing first too no avail. If I hook up the protable drill to the tranny end, the speedo moves smooth. If I let it hang when I drive the inside cable doesn't move all the time. Sooo.I guess I'll pull the speedo gear assy. next and see what's going on in there.
looks like autommetter(I think) better come up with a electronic replacement soon. They have one, but not with the turn signals built in, like us 69-77'ers need. You could also custom fab something, but that would take away from the car I think, Plus you risk hurting a $300 dash. We need a solution. As well as a tach solution. My tach is...well it is out of its mind. At idle it reads 2800-3000 RPM, at highway speeds it reads aprox 7500 RPM(its off the scale, and it tops out at 7 grand)...I dunno what its deal is, that will be a project for a later date....
