Hi Guys
I'm sure this has been discussed before. I have been thinking about installing FI (Horsepower TV this past weekend) any input? My biggist issue is what to do about the ignition? Most FI kits or systems use a signal from a HEI type ignition. Whats the best way to remedy this??

You would get a better response if you could narrow down what you are looking for. FI just means Fuel Injection. Ask yourself what you want it for, and what engine you are starting with.
Do you want performance or reliability? Do you have an HP goal? Do you want a bolt on kit or something that could be adapted to your current setup?
There are a lot of options, but figuring out which is best for you requires more info.
I am looking for somthing for my 74. Nothing outragous, maybe a little more than the chevy RamJet motor. Car is not daily driver, but fuel injection makes such a differance in "drivability" it has sparked my interest.

Okay, so you have a 350 now. Do you want to replace that 350 or add to it to make a fuel injected motor?
Well I'm not sure, it looks like most of the FI systems retail for just under 2K, so is it cost effective to ad F/I or purchase a Ramjet motor. The RamJet is rated at 350hp / 350 torque but I assume thats a gross rating. Some chevy HP dealers sell a modified ramjet motor (upgrades heads, cam) So thats the delima, I don't mind replacing the motor, as the car has no real "collector value" but as always $$$ becomes the issue. I'm really looking for some input from other members who went the F/I route, what was thier cost, do they feel the additional cost was worth the $$$, overall satisfaction with the conversion.
I just finished building a 405, and was gonna just carb it. Now though, I am second guessing that and hopefully will be fuel injecting it. Now, I imagine this will only cost me around $1000 for everything. I am purchasing a complete LT1 motor. I will be modifying the intake to fit my '89 heads, and it'll bolt right down. It came with a computer and harness, and all I have to do is map out the fuel and wiring. The rest of the motor remains unchanged for the most part.
I suppose an even cheaper option is to convert your carbed motor to a TBI setup from any junk yard Chevy truck from the '80s and early '90s.

Change to HEI ignition. If you have a 75 up you already have it. Then you need a 75-77 Tach or convert to electronic tach on 68-74 cars. GM TPI and TBI use a small-cap electronic distributor except Corvette which has a unique HEI.
The Hei will have to be a later unit than the earlier unit. The later units did not use a vacuum advance canister, it is controlled by the computer. Jims performance in Md. can set you up. He can also build you a stand alone harness. www.jimsperformance.com
I put a tune port on my stock 73 motor ran good ,20mpg highway 15 city.Iwanted something different and put in a ls1.I still have the HEI dist. thats been converted to tach drive. It is in good shape with 7,000 miles on it.Take $200 for it.
Basically a cheap add on would be TBI, TPI, and LT1. Spend some time reading about all three options. TBI has potential for a lot of cheap power, and TPI and LT1 will get you reliability and economy with good power. I don't know the height of TPI manifolds but it may not fit under some stock hoods.

TPI (and LT1) fits under all stock C3 hoods. Ram Jet may not.

Cool. That adds icing to the cake. $1000 could buy you any one of those factory style FI manifolds, hardware, harness, computer, parts, an programming. Not a bad price for a do-it-yourself FI system.
