There are two 3/8" rubber hoses moulded into the drivers side
of the battery box on the '75. In the box they are about one foot
long - under the box they are about three inches long.
I believe they were installed for safety purposes and were attached to the battery. In the event the battery expelled acid, it would drain to the outside. If you remove them, be sure to plug the holes.

for venting battery fumes, this was before the time of "sealed" batteries, and with the battery in a box inside te passenger cabin.
On my '75 the rubber boot for the gas tank has fallen down - can
I replace this with the gas tank on? Is it easy to do?
Thanks.
There is the large round rubber cup shaped part that is underneath the gas cap. To it is attached a fuel drain hose. I believe you can get to both of these but it's a tight fit if I recall.
The vent hoses were to direct hydrogen fumes outside of the battery box area for safety reasons. Today's replacement batteries will not accept the caps the hoses were used with on the original batteries. It's for this reason I think it's very important to install only sealed batteries for replacements. Something about a possible explosive mixture of hydrogen fumes right behind my seat bothers me a little.
