The 383 I have now was built by someone else. I was doing a frame off at that time so I had plenty of other work to do, so I farmed out the engine build to a local speed shop. It started coming apart with less than a 100 miles. I pulled the engine and took it a part and found as follows. The inside of the engine had been painted and was starting to flake off, 3/4 of my oil pickup screen was stopped up. I had requested Sportsman II head and this is what I got, however they had the heavy dual springs for a roller cam and I was running a hyd. flat tappet, 3 lobes wiped on the cam. The push rods were to long making the rocker work on the outside edge of the valve stem. The block had not been properly relieved for a stroker. The rotating asym was out of balanc. There were a couple other things I can't remember at this time. My builder told me to bring it back, but with all I found wrong I didn't trust him. So I found a good machine shop went to .40 over to clean up the bores, turned the crank, etc and built it myself. I have about 15,000 on this motor. I will not have someone else build a motor for me again. Even if I bought a short block, I would take it apart and check all the specs.
