Does anyone have experience with the K&N XStream Air Flow Top? I have a 79 L-82 with the stock hood. We are currently installing an Edlebrock top end kit which includes the RPM air gap intake. Lack of hood clearance is a problem.
I priced out a new hood to get the required height but am experiencing sticker shock ($1,200 for new hood, painted). My first thought was to use a drop base air cleaner with a 2" filter but now understand that this will restrict air flow too much. I found the K&N filter top and am wondering, with the top and sides, will this provide adequate air flow? Besides looks, any other considerations?
Does your car have the stock dual snorkel air cleaner that sucks in cold air from outside of the car? If so, why not use it with a K&N Filter element for increased air flow? My car was missing the stock air cleaner assembly that pulled in fresh cold air from over the top of the radiator. I've been toying with the idea of re-installing this set-up as opposed to the 14x3" chrome air cleaner that I have on it now which sucks in hot air from the engine compartment. I know the stock one doesn't look as flashy, but they make a chrome lid for it which would dress it up a bit.
Let see: Xstreem lid+fiberglass hood=Carry a BIG fire extinguisher! I had one on my 72 LT-1 for a while, thought about the ramifications of a carb backfire, and promptly took it off. My LT-1 hood does cost way more to replace than your hood so, who I am to tell you what to do.

All of the stock air cleaner assembly was gone fromthe car when I got it.

Bear with me, I am not that experienced with motors. How would a backfire through the carb be any different with the modified lid. It would seem to me that a backfire that severe would burn out the common 3" element as well?
The backfire goes vertically up and will not affect a conventional air filter element. The metal lid suppresses the flame. With a paper lid you can imagine the result.
is it taller than the Edelbrock Performer? I've got the performer and a Edelbk carb and a drop-base aircleaner with a 3" element and it's close but it still fits.

I have the RPM Airgap with extreme on top of a 750 holley vac sec under a standard 74 hood...it just fits with the top wing nut replaced with an ordinary nut...john
