Hi
need a transmission (auto) shift cable for a 74 - old one has been bowed (I have been told that once they are bowed, they have a tendency to continue) the new one I bought at NAPA had a cable that was about a 1/16 thick....so need a proper one with a thick cable, anyone have one they want to sell?
Thanks
I just bought a new one for the '76 made by Pioneer, P/N CA-1145. It looks exactly like the OEM unit and I bought it through Schucks/Checker/Kragen for $47. I think Autozone matches their prices too. Chances are the Dr Rebuild part is aftermarket as well since it doesn't say GM p/n like he usually does for genuine parts.
Great
Thanks - is the Pioneer, P/N CA-1145 cable just as heavy/thick as the original...??
the one I got from NAPA had a cable (you can see it under the bellows) was quite thin only about a 1/16
Thanks
Jim,
I think I solved your problem. You said you can see cable under the bellows/boots. This should not be the case! This will allow the control cable to indeed bend. The new Pioneer cable is such that the inner cable is swagged into the two metal rod ends. Those rod ends then slide inside metal guide tubes at each end of the control cable. If the rod end is such that it extends beyond the guide tube, and then when the cable extends beyond the guide tube when force is applied, the cable takes the path of least resistance and arcs rather than driving the rod end forward.
On the new Pioneer cable, I can not pull the rod ends out of the guide tube in either direction to see bare cable. The OEM cable is constructed the same way, I had to yank it apart with one end in a vise and that was with the cable broke somewhere in the middle. The cable OD mic's out at .085", 1/16" is .062".
I would return the cable and say it was defective based on your experience with it and what I see with the new Pioneer and old OEM cable.
