Default Tach problem

I have a 79 with stock ignition with a peged out tach. With ignition on tach pegs out above 7000 then when you start car tach goes to about 3000 rpm and will read very high. It will also peg out when you touch the gas. You think its the circuit board or should I look for something else. Thanks Dave

I would look at the circuit board. I think it is quite easier to get to then my '76.

I was just under the inpression that the tach board was more for non working tachs which really does not make mush sence anyway.

You may be right. I'm suggesting it because I think it easy to get to and obviously it is getting power. If it is easy to get to, just look for burn spots on the board.

One other thing, Dave, I put a new board in a '75 which I got from Zip. They told me no adjustments were necessary and to just install it. I later talked to a speedo shop and they said it definitely needed to be set up before installation. I don't know who is right but I did let the shop do its thing because it was such a pita to get to and I didn't want to have to pull it out again. I don't know if yours is adjustable or not. Jud

I would also look at the tach filter. If it ain't working right you won't get good signal at board.I changed both the filter and the board.

Did you install the board without it being set up?

OK I made time today to work on the tach problem.I found the tach filter missing and the circuit board has burn marks also. I ordered both so I should be good to go. Dave
