Default air cleaner ????

I have 76 l-82 and would like to install an open stlye air cleaner on it. whatmods are needed to do this. a.i.r. pump has been disconnected and the tube that comes out of the valve cover to the air intake snorkel has also been removed. Just trying to make it breath better. will soon be doing headers and making it a true dual exhuast w/ no cat. otherwise motor is stock.
thanks for the help

Get a 14" round air cleaner with a drop down base, add a 14"x3" K&N filter, add headers. I didn't have to modify anything. Makes a good difference. I did it to my 77, stock L-48. The only other thing I did was change intake to a Performer 2101, rebuilt the Q-jet, and tweaked the dist. a little with new weights and springs. Runs a lot better!! Have even seen close to 17 mpg with a 3:70 rear gear.

I may be wrong but doesn't your L-82 have the dual snorkles to get cold air from in front of the radiator? If it does, an open element will lower the restriction, but you will end up with less oxygen for your engine. This is a common mistake people make when trying to improve performance. Have you ever been in an area so hot it was hard to breath (in front of an oven)? The reason is that the oxygen molecules spread out as temperatures rise (the air gets thinner). C3 Vettes are known for high under hood temperatures (especially after you install headers)!. Your engine will be gasping for breath with an open element (I know this is going to start an argument with someone.). If you want better breathing, just get the K&N filter and keep the dense cold air from your stock set up. God bless, Sensei

Yep, the dual snorkel thing is ugly but it works.

Even though the dual snorkle breathes cooler air, it is a major flow restriction and the LT-1 open air cleaner will make more power. Just get the factory replacement 70-72 LT-1 air cleaner assembly and it will look nice and work perfect.

What year big block C3's used the closed air cleaner assembly? I know the 69 was open. I need to find an enclosed one to use on a 69.

Thanks,
Joe
