Default Tremec Install question....

Prior to the instll I am reading through a lot of old threads, articles etc and I found mention where one said I would need to get a new starter as I am switching from an automatic to a manual. Is this true?
My original thought was that as long as I hae the propoer lysheel / # of teeth, it should still work and line up. Correct?
Thanks
Shane

Which flywheel did you have and what do you have now. If you had a turbo 400 168 teeth and a big 168 tooth flywheel now you will be OK. If you had a turbo 350 153 tooth you will need to change if you have the big flywheel.

The aluminum nosed starter for the automatic is too large to fit inside the bellhousing of a standard shift C3. You will either have to get the smaller steel nose cone for your starter or buy a new starter for a standard.

Gordon - 400/168 and now 168 as well.

Binnie - This sounds like what I was reading. Is the assumption for this that I have original starter? What about starters from 1979? WHen I bought the car, it had a 79 engine in a 73.

If I do order a new starter, is there something specific I need to look for?
Thanks
Shane

Hi Shane

I bought my starter from NAPA after I discovered my new bellhousing would not fit over the nose cone of my original. NAPA had listings for automatic cars and standard. From what I have researched, all automatic starters have an aluminum nose cone and standards had steel. Also the starter bolts are shorter for the standard so you will need to buy those as well.

Should just go with a GM mini starter and be done with it. They work great and are smaller and lighter.

Actually any GM or any parts store. The GM mini starter is used in lots of applications. You can probably get a rebuilt one from a parts supply house for less than 100. Very common good starter. It is the same one used for the 502 motors also so it should have plenty of power. Never let me down in 5 years now.
