just swapped out the auto pedal to 4 speed on my project 70 vert. bubba had used mass quantities of an asphalt or tar based material in the trough where the windshield mechanism fits (had to remove to access the bolts). there was a small stress crack in the glass around the pedal mount bolts. probably an attempt to seal a water leak.
what's the best way to remove this junk, and what's the best way to repair these cracks? i had to use a small amount of lacquer thinner to wipe this stuff off the bolts, and i'm affraid that it will turn into a real mess if i use too much.
Not sure of the correct name. Buy an Assembly Instruction Manual (also called AIM) from one of the suppliers. Everything you need to know about how your car was originally put together. There as a section on sealants, lubricants, etc. describing the products used. The detail for the firewall/wiper tray area will reference a code for the product. Big G, or some of the other pro body guys here on the forum can probably tell you what you should use, but when in doubt, look it up in the AIM.

At any auto body/paint supply store, you can buy seam sealer products that work for this application. "Self Leveling Seam Sealer" is a good product that can be brushed on. It then lays out smooth and looks good. Another cool product is seam seal tape. This is a great product that comes in a roll in different widths. You stick in on the seams, and it "cures" when you paint over it. It gives a very clean, professional appearance - made by 3M.
I have used brush on truck bed liner in the cowl area for two cars and they came out very nice. I removed every thing first and scraped flat as possible. The material will provide more than enough water proofing and looks very close to original.
