I just bought 2 replacement door springs and the install tool for my '76. Can anyone tell me the easy way to replace these or point me to a "how to"? Do they just pop out and pop in. It's a tight spot and I haven't found anything yet that's easy to do
It's not easy, that's for sure. The installation tool and a hammer to tap the spring up and down will be useful. I don't remember exactly but I think I put the top in first, pulled it down and used the tool to twist the spring, then tapped it up until it engaged the hinge.
If you position everything right, including the tool, you can use the door to do the twisting. Depending on left or right door, look and see which direction you ned to twist the spring. Set the tool against the leading edge of the door and slowly pull the door toward closure. When the spring end lines up, tap it in with a hammer.
It's frustrating the first few times but is really quite easy once you get the hang of it. WARNING! Do not throw the hammer at your other vehicle if you get pissed.

I took my doors off to do this. My doors' "armpits" were so disgusting I wanted to clean them up. I stripped and repainted the hinges at the same time.
Another tip- put a towel or old tee shirt in the space between the door and the body at the doorsill to protect the paint when you drop the spring. I must've dropped mine a half dozen times before I learned the trick to install. Glad I used a cushion.
I used a bent hanger to sort of suspend the spring with one hand and then used the "tool" to tap it into the holes...then tapped it with a hammer.
I almost have to laugh because after many attempts I seriously thought this was a cruel joke someone plays on unsuspecting Corvette owners...once I looked at the opposite side to see exactly how it fits into place it made sense. Good luck, it will take a little time and patience.
I don't know how long I spent trying to do it without the hammer. I think they leave that part out in the instructions. A tiny hammer tap makes all the difference.
