Default Transmission crossmembers

With all the discussion about different crossmembers that might or might not be needed for a transmission swap, I have one big question.

Does the tranny crossmember do anything other than support the tranny? IE, does it provide additional stiffness to the frame? Obviously, having it there will provide some stiffness, but is it an issue to move it a few inches one way or the other?

I dont beleive the x member really reinforces the frame. Seeing how the auto cars had a bolt on x member, the x over probably just supports the tranny. If in fact it reinfocres the frame, its minimal

If you are going to move the crossmember you will need to modify the emergancey brake pulley bracket.

In most cases all you need to do is modify the bracket that bolts to the crossmember leaving the crossmember bolted or welded in its original location.

I think one of our European members moved his crossmember back an inch or so, so that he could install a five speed (6 speed?) transmission and disguise this modification to anyone inspecting his car. Apparantly mechanical inspectors in Europe can be pretty picky.

Moving the crossmember back an inch or two shouldn't be a problem..I dont think. (The parking brake cable wire from the parking brake handle might have to be lengthened as metioned above. )

that would have been wesch....I think.

There's no issue with the parking brake cable, it's a 2 pc system where the cable from the lever runs to the pinion area/rear crossmember and is spring loaded there, an adjuster T-s off and goes to the wheels. There's more than enough play and adjustment in it to not worry about the bracket.
