Saginaw always recommended a high quality, lithium based, ball joint or chassis grease. That was over 25 years ago. There are probably synthetic chassis greases that will perform as good or better today.
Just make sure that you leave some air space inside the gear for the grease to expand with underhood temperatures. Otherwise, the gear can build up pressure inside and blow the shaft seals.
