Default Head gasket questions

My bore is 4.030 but gaskets come in 4.000, 4.100, 4.200 etc....

Will the 4.000 cover me or must I get the 4.100 or bigger?

I'm looking for 0.030 compressed thickness, should I go copper or is composite OK for Aluminum heads and steel block? Recommedations?

Composites are good. Fel-Pro Permatorque..

As far as the bore size- I'd personally not use the 4.00 gasket on a bigger bore. That little edge hanging out would give you a really good hot spot and some pre-ignition for a while. But I bet on the flip side there's guys running a 4.00 gasket on a 4.060 bore. Just my $.02

It's your bore of 4.030", plus the chamfer around the bore that also needs to be figured in. Most engines would use the #1003 w/ 4.166" bore I.D., cast heads and block. Many have used with aluminum heads, those that repeatedly teardown (racers) would see some slight brinelling in the alum head where the C.O. armor sits (has steel wire inside armor). Another good choice is the #1010 which is used with Corvette heads ('87-91 heads) and has a copper wire in the C.O. armor which would leave no brinelling and is used with your new bore size.

Sometimes cylinder head manufacturers design around a common head gasket design and may have a certain number to use, research that also.

Like stated above, if it's too close or hangs over it'll cause detonation and a pile of junk.

If you go copper, go 4.200".

Hope this helps,
Later.

I'm wondering if the bigger gasket bore size lowers CR so that getting as close to your actual bore is what you want?

if you have not 0 decked your block you can use felpro victor part#

.030 over engines can use stock gaskets. Just make sure the fire ring is not in the bore.

YES & YES ... it's not a "felpro victor" as there's no such thing ... it is Victor Reinz P/N 5746 ... widely available.

However, LM's specs are correct and ... make VR5746 a good choice for a 4.030" chamfered bore w/ Al heads.
